I used to have an MHG. It is definitely the most brutal, thickest sounding module when you are playing alone and sounds fantastic. However, I had issues being heard when playing in a full band mix. The EG5 is like a variation on the MHG. It still has a modern sound, tons of gain, great definition and is very tight, but it has a boost in the high mids that helps you get heard when playing in a band mix. IMO, EG5 is the Egnater high gain module to get. I almost never take it out of the head.

I've been working the MHG pretty hard this week... it's my favorite high-gain rhythm module because it's thicker and warmer than both the E-RECT and SL2 modules. Kinda reminds me of the H&K Triamp II I used to own... not the "American" tone, not the "British" tone, but the "German" tone. :)

FWIW, I haven't used the MHG much in a band context so I can't comment on it there, nor have I tried the EG5 for sake of comparison. But on it's own, it kicks all ass!

I totally agree that it kicks ass all by itself, but it gets buried pretty fast in the mix,i havent tried the EG5 yet,but it should be here any day now :D

In my pursuit of tone, I’ve just heard a full band rock recording with the guitar using the eg5.

The guitar sounded awesome (huge)but the rest of the band (and they are all rockers)sound more mellow or less aggressive sonically than the guitarist. To me this results in the band not sounding authentic and authoritative because they are not all on the same page. From a production stand point, serving the song/band best will result in serving the listener best and result in greater success. If one guy or gal stands out, you start lose power/momentum and most important the feel of the vibe the band is trying to get across. Thats not to say that you shouldnt have good seperation of instruments in the mix but there are other reasons that may or may not be happening.

Whatever module it takes!

my two cents

Angelo,

I agree with you here. I always think its strange to hear a gained-out Dual Rectifier on a pop record. Its the same idea as what you are saying, but really, thats a production decision. In the studio, the producer will use whatever he/she wants to get the sound they want. We may not agree with that sound but maybe thats why we arent producing that record. :D

Anyway, the original post was about the MHG. The EG5 is no more aggressive that the MHG. It just has better cut. The MHG would sound just as out of place to you on whatever record you are talking about here. Maybe its just a little too much for what you want and SL2 or EG3/4 would be better.

Great points!

Its so difficult not having the modules right in front of you to choose.

Once an expander is available and I can build up serveral modules,
I am confident to be able to match the nessesary tones for tunes etc.

I have really appreciated everyones input thus far.

Thanks
Angelo
