The direct out is really more for convenience than to actually replace a properly mic'd cabinet. For recording, of course you can have a choice of mics and can perfectly place it for just the right sound. The mic eliminator had a fixed sound that you can't change. If it works for you then....great. It is really nice to have live so you are not at the mercy of a bad or improperly placed mic. At least you know what you are sending to the mixer. For recording, try a combination of the eliminator and a real mic. Now that sounds really good. FYI, there are quite a few players using the mic elimimator live and it works great for them.
