Has anyone done a real world comparison? I am looking to order a mic eliminator but won't bother if it really can't stand up to a good mic'ed speaker.

Thanks for any opinions..

Wonder how close the mic eliminator is to how the direct out on the rebel 30 and renegade sounds?

If so, with any analog filtered Direct out, and my experience with the 30, is that it is just a tad too filtered and slightly stuffy compared to a good mic'd cab. But the positives is that its a super clean signal and may work better depending on how your cab sounds, mics used.

But on a decent cab and the right mics, I don't think you can beat the real mic'd situation. Just something about capturing that moving air. I do however think its possible to get some very good results with the right Digital IR's.

If you want, I can post a clip comparing the two.

A friend of mine has the Rebel 30 in his studio and he much prefers the speaker mic'ed. SO, I wonder how that relates to the mic eliminator. Howe about for live gigs? I mean most places either mic you or use stage volume so you can get by without the mic eliminator...plus I bought my speakers for a reason. I like them! LOL.

Hey man, clips would be cool..thanks!

For live, its very very convenient. FOH gets a very clean signal and its certainly usable as well as consistent. . Just for any recording, or live recording, i would definetally opt for a well micd cab situation. Well micd is the optimal word. A single 57 on a crappy cab, the direct may just win out. I would assume the mic eliminator would be similiar, since I believe Bruce designed both. I have had the palmer DI solution before, much more expensive, and like I said, with an analog filtered setup, usually its just a tad too filtered for my taste and lacks just a bit of mojo and live sound. For cleans the rebel 30 direct is pretty great, for drive, its just ok, a little muffled compared to what I like to hear.

Here is a clip comparing 3 sounds all the same riff. First one is a cab micd with a Shure SM7, then a Heil PR30 (brighter), then lastly the rebel 30 direct. All recorded at bedroom levels. The direct works pretty good, similair sound to the SM7, just a little bit more filtered. Hope this helps

The direct out is really more for convenience than to actually replace a properly mic'd cabinet. For recording, of course you can have a choice of mics and can perfectly place it for just the right sound. The mic eliminator had a fixed sound that you can't change. If it works for you then....great. It is really nice to have live so you are not at the mercy of a bad or improperly placed mic. At least you know what you are sending to the mixer. For recording, try a combination of the eliminator and a real mic. Now that sounds really good. FYI, there are quite a few players using the mic elimimator live and it works great for them. Ty Tabor, Dan Donegan and a whole bunch of not so famous people, to name a few.

its certainly convenient. I find that the Rebel 30 direct out is close to the Palmer, which is a pretty expensive direct out solution. The only thing that I noticed is that sometimes it will cut out after longer periods of use, then you have to restart the amp to get it back. a strange little quirk, but nothing that has effected me yet
