What is a good Mic to go along with the SM57 that will not cost me $1000. I want to keep the Mic under $300 if possible but still get a good complimentary mic tone for guitar. If I understand correctly the large diaphragm ones are best for this over medium or small.

That one looks good. I am thinking about the MXL V69ME, how does the CAD compare to this one?

I read the posts by searching for this and there was one last month. Seemed like a lot of different opinions on this subject. I will be recording with a SM57 everything from contemporary music to 80s Rock/Metal if this helps.

+1 on ribbon mics.

Good condenser mic near that price range (you are going to use it as a room mic as I understand) is Oktava 319 modified by Michael Joly ( PE mod : oktavamod.com ). Will also work great for vocals & a lot of other applications. Good all around mic in sub 500$ category. Another killer mic for amps is Shure SM7B, which will also work great for vocals if you have a good preamp.
MXL V69ME is a great mic too, gets even better with Mullard tube, but I find it a bit too harsh, but hard to beat for the price.

If I understand you correctly about preamp I am using the Apogee Duet and as I understand the Mic pre's in this unit are very good. Is this what you are speaking of? I am quite a newbie when it comes to recording.

It will be a room mic to go along with the SM57. I will be using it mostly for guitar. However vocals might come into play in the near future so one that works well for both would be nice.

Yes, that's correct.

Oktavamod 319 will be a great addition IMO.
V69ME is one of the few Chinese mics that I actually like, so you can't go wrong with it either.
If I were you I'd ditch the 57 & replace it with SM7B & get a V69 with it. That way you'll have 2 great vocal mics, sm7 for cabs & v69 for ac guitars, rooms & so on. Those two should cover a lot of ground for you. SM7 shares a lot of similarities with the 319, so I wouldn't really get both.

I hope that helps.

How good is the Sennheiser evolution e906 compared to the others listed here? Anybody use this one for guitar? Is it too similar to the SM57?

Not similar. Generally saying it will not be as mid forward as 57.
If you're going Sennheiser I'd say get a MD421.

What is that you feel you need that your 57 is not?

I really do not dislike the 57, and I guess it really is not a need that the 57 is not, just everything I read about recording says you should dual mic at a min and mix them together. So I am wanting to experiment with this and see what it adds. I am very new to recording so I am in a stage of trying things and figured getting something that complimented the 57 well would be nice. I also have a friend who is writing songs with me who is a singer, so a mic that will work for vocals also is a big plus as I think the 57 is not a good choice for vocals at all. The CAD M179 is in the right price range at only $200. Is it also a good vocal mic? Just to clarify also the original post was regarding a good mic for complimenting the 57 the vocal part is not a necessity as he has and will be purchasing other vocal mics. If the mic that I get is good for both it is just another plus in the purchase category.

Also thanks for all of the feedback, I have some choices to review now and I am one step closer to getting one.

If you want a mic to compliment your 57, 421 is a classic choice for that. If you look around you should be able to find one used within your budget.
Trion7000 will fatten up the sound, which is another very good mic.
Neither of these are going to work as a room mic however.
