Hello

I'm new to all this midi stuff and i would like a little advice please. I'm thinking of buying a voodoo labs ground control pro, i would like to set up presets using the 4 channels of the VH4 and various effects of my G Major 2. (eg. switching from channel 1 with chorus to channel 3 with delay) Is it possible to do that? Is the ground control pro the only thing that i will need to do this?

Many thanks

Yes, you can do this. The GCP is a great controller. you can launch the Space Shuttle with it...and change your amp functions too..LOL :rock: ! You should also check out the Columbus!

Yes, the GCP can do this for you.
Other MIDI controllers could do it as well, though.
I have a Behringer FCB 1010 which works great.
Axess Electronics is great, Tech 21, Nobels, you name it.

The trick is to tell your fx device and amp which function should be activated when a certain button on your controller is pressed. The easiest way would be to press button 1 on the GCP and see what happens on the G Major first.
Most rack devices, like my Rocktron Intellifex, have a "MIDI mapping" mode. With this, you can route any MIDI program change message (this is what the GCP sends to it) to any effect number (or bank or whatever the G Major's system is).
So just read the G Majors manual carefully and look for "MIDI mapping".

The Diezel is set up more easily then. Just press the button the GCP, make the desired settings on the amp and press "store" twice (I think it was something like this). As you have no menues or display, it's more comfortable.
But that's why I would set up the G Major first and then the Diezel.

So, if you want channel 1 on the Diezel, a compressor in the insert loop, with chorus from the G Major when you press button one on the Ground Control:

1. press button one
2. map the program change to the chorus preset on the G Major and store it
3. set up the channel and insert on the VH4 and store it

off you go.

Wow, you know your stuff! Thanks very much for our help and advice. Seems much clearer when it comes from someone rather a manual lol.

Just done some research and i have been told that i would need to buy a VL gcx switcher with the VL ground control in order to use the g major 2. The switcher is the same price as the unit! I'm also looking into the Diezel columbus as it has the useful phantom power feature - would i need a switcher if i were to buy the Columbus??

Cheers

I use a cheap Rolls Midi buddy and it controls the midi for my VH4 and my Glass Nexus, I go into the VH4 and thru to the Glass Nexus. I don't think you need to spend all that money. The g major should work with almost all midi controllers.

I'll soon have a used VH4 which I will use with an Engl Z12 Midi-Controller (yeah, I know, no phantom power without modding :) ) and I guess I will also grab a used G-Major. I researched a bit about the midi-stuff, since it's new to me, but I think I got that covered with the midi-channels, midi-mapping and so on.

But I'm still confused about the remaining setup besides the midi cables.

This is how I understand it:
(kickapoo --> Guitar :D )
Guitar --> VH4
Engl Z12 Midi-Out --> VH4 Midi-In
VH4 Midi-Through --> G-Major Midi-In

VH4 (Serial) Send --> G-Major Mono Input
G-Major Mono Output --> VH4 (Serial) Return

Correct so far?

With this wiring, the activated effects are going through the VH4s serial loop. But what about effects like Compressor and Noise Gate, which are also included with the G-Major? Don't these have to be placed in front of the amp in the signal chain? Or am I confusing this with something else I've read once about signal chain stuff? :confused:

Thx & Greetz,
kickapoo

You don't need the GCX. The GCX is a loop switcher and is not absolutely necessary in your situation. Did your research tell you that you needed it just because of the phantom power situation? I have a regular Ground Control that I have been using forever and I plan on using it with my Herbert. I would recommend them as well, they are great units. :thumbsup:
