OK guys, after about 50 beers this weekend at NAMM, Eric has pretty much convinced me to MIDI-ize my rig. Im looking at picking up a Nova System and small foot controller. Ill probably get rid of my Timefactor, Whammy II, and EVH Phase 90 in the process. I dont want anything real sophisticated just basic PC and CC functionality. I was looking at these controllers:

Tech 21 Midi Moose
Peak FCB4N2
Rocktron Midimate

Any recommendations?

  Get the RJM mastermind,I know it's not on the list but have a couple more beers

Hard to go wrong with Ron at RJM, download the owners manual, it's a very user friendly! The manual and the Mastermind

The mastermind looks like a really good unit but it's a little bigger than I'd like.

It's not big and your not playing that right

Why get rid of the Whammy II and EVH Phase 90? I have pedals in my rig as well. What are you planning on replacing them with?

Welcome to the dark side. Your transformation will soon be complete! It is your destiny.

BTW, I really like the Lexicon foot controller that I got with my MPX G2.

Because I really just wont need them. With an expression pedal hooked up to the Nova System I will have Whammy capability and it has a phaser built in.

My Timefactor and Whammy II are going on the chopping block I think.

I'd highly recommend NOT getting the midi mouse for you man. Yes it is small...but I'm not fond of having to click more than necessary. To go up 2 patches you have to hit the button twice...and then activate it. I personally think that is annoying. I'd rather have at least 3-4 buttons to select in a song (pc1 - clean, pc2 - crunch, pc3 - gained out rhythm, pc4- lead) and then the ability to bank up / down to another set of four for a song while playing live.

Never used the Peak stuff, but it looks good. I'd add the Axess Electronics MFC5 to that list also, even though they aren't in business.

I think the MFC5 and Peak one look the best for you honestly.

Eric

The midi mate is 3" wider than the RJM mastermind. I used the rocktron for years and it still works. Great controller for the money.

I really like the RJM gear and the mastermind is a well though out unit. I agree with Eric that if you go with a controller that is too small, you'll end up having to hit more buttons to accomplish your switching.

If you don't know about Liquid Foot, you may want to check them out too. Larry Mitchel told me all about them over coffee once. That dude has one of everything! http://www.liquid-foot.com It's a sophisticated unit, durable and great value. I don't own one as I am happy with my Axess FX1 for my big rig and and a RMJ Mastermind for my highly portable AX FX, Mastermind, and controllers all in one 4 space rack. The Mastemind's small size is a big plus if you are trying to make a conveniently sized pedalboard with some controllers, etc. Since there are so many different flavors of controllers out there, you really need to figure out what you want to do first.

I have a Ground control pro. Great pedal and I think Rareguitar (Brad) has one for sale at a great price.

+1

What are the midi devices that you're trying to control? If you're only going to have the Nova System and the Mod 50, then you won't need another foot controller at all. With the Nova System, you can do custom mapping of Prog Changes to the Midi out for patch selection on external Midi devices... i.e your Mod 50. I don't have a Nova System, but I considered it when I was looking for a multi FX unit that could change channels on my M4. I ended up with a G System (because I wanted to be able to hook everything up using 4CM) and it works great.

why don't you just use PCs on the nova system in program mode?

Not really necessary to add another foot controller?

Well I want to use the nova in stompbox mode. Basically I want to send PCs to activate presets in the Nova, but then I always want to be able to turn individual effects on and off in that patch like individual stompboxes.

Right now its looking between the Mastermind and Liquid Foot Jr. But man these things are not cheap. I liked the price of the Midi Moose alot better!

GC Pro is a nice unit and i used to have one, but that thing is enormous.
