Mission Impossible movies

My wife and I decided we'd watch all the Mission Impossible movies in order. The first one was pretty good, but we finished the second one last night and I'm not sure we're going to make it. Even for a popcorn flick that was really bad. 15 minutes in we knew it was going to be difficult to watch.

Do the movies get any better?

How did that film NOT kill the franchise?
