What can I say, speechless  :rawk: Put 2 6550s in the center and 2 E34Ls in the outside and it was it!!!!The tone with any module was astonishing!!Something the Mod 100 does that none of the others, this huge wall of sound so smooth, yet destructive, nasty but sweet....I thought I played it so loud that I blew a speaker, this rattle after about 2 hours of noodling into nothingness appeared  well it turned out to be the retainer caps for the 12ax7 tubes in the chassis :D I think I might need another one of these

Very nice. I'm planning on trying that mix in my TBR-5 only a quartet of each. What cabs/speakers are you running?

FUCKING DO IT!

That's what I do with my TBR-2SL, and an M4 plugged into the fx return.

Yes Sensei. :worship:   1/11 is the OH guitar show. I plan on grabbing a buncha tubes. I'm going to have a V1 shootout in the EG5 and BMAN. I'm going to take your wife Eric's advice and grab a 5751, maybe a 12AT7, some Sovtek AX7's, and a quartet of 6550's. I can't imagine my rig sounding any better than it does now so I'm very excited to give this stuff a try.

:D I had these same thoughts   It does get better with the right choices :2thumbsup:

Interestingly, the Sovtek WA's sound like piss in V1 (IMO), yet add complexity and flavor in V2.

I've been wanting to mix EL34's and 6L6's in my MOD 100 too. The only reason I haven't done it is the 5881's that it came with sound pretty good. But now that Jason's tested it, I'll probably try it too. Isn't that why we all bought the MOD stuff? You never feel like you're stuck with one sound. And you can easily find YOUR tone.

You gotta love this amp.

The 6L6s and E34Ls sound good in the RT2/50 but as soon as I lost the 6L6s and dropped the 6550s in there  same with the Mod100  Just a power combo,to me of course :D

So it's EL34's and 6550's in combination. I didn't know that much about the 6550, I guess it's a beefed up 6L6. Well that's cool. Where do you buy your tubes? I need to check this out.

I did something similar with EL34's and 6L6's in my Mesa Mark IV. I does give it a unique tone. Fat round lows with the British sizzle on the high end. Nice combo. Now I need a pair of 6550's! Jason, what mV are you running your EL34's and 6550's?

There are a number of good tubes sources. Dougstubes,Tubestore,TubeDepot and I just picked up a set of 6550s from Bioaudioworks cause I know one of you guys bought the last set from Dougs :D

6550s are definitely not "just a beefed up 6L6." They are definitely their own animal. I've not found a 6L6 or 5881 (minus the TS 5881 that i *liked* but didn't love) I could stand in my rig. EL34's I really still like for certain applications. 6550s have tons more headroom that either a 6L6 or EL34. Plus they have more mid-range than a 6L6. I couldn't stand 6L6's because they were too hollow for me. 6550s are definitely very big and warm sounding. I tend to run my 6550s in both my VHT 2/90/2 and Mod50 on the hotter end of the spectrum, because I like them to get pushed some. But, they still have tons of headroom, which is the reason I like them the most. I'm NOT a fan of power tube distortion. Power tube warmth, yes, I am a fan of, but distortion ... not for me!

I have run 6550s in my amps for years, and I can't say I have found a better tube for power!

Good post Eric - Like I said, I don't know that much about the 6550's because I've never used them. I don't even remember seeing them on the tube listing in my manual. What mV do you run yours?

Around 43-45 mv, which 45 mv is the highest setting typically you would want to use on the Mod50.

just did some recording with the EG3/4 on Ch B (PRS Custom 24) for lead over some clean jazz chords and it is soooo sweet, liquid, violin like. I cant wait to try it with 6550's :D
