Im looking for an egnater modular rig used and was just wondering which rig you guys think would sound better. So which do you prefer, the head, or a preamp and the rt250? all opinions are appreciated

I have a Mod 50 and an M4 rig. Both sound incredible, but they do sound different. Not better or worse, just different. A head always a certain feel and response that I've never found 100% in a preamp. However, I've been favoring the M4 preamp more than the head for a while now-at least at lower volumes. Up loud, the mod 50 sreams.

Is that unclear enough for you :D ?

If I had to choose one, It would be the M4 rig for the 2 extra modules and the RT2/50 for the switchable channels.

so would you say that the head has a little more mojo? or that the flexibility of the preamp means all around better tone? im not really concerned about the two extra modules i think two would be plenty for each gig. and does the channel switching mean you could be up on stage playin a sl2 module with el34's and then footswitch to a dlx module with 6l6''s?

I wouldn't say the head has more mojo. All the Egnater gear has mojo IMO. The Mod 50 is flexible with 4 channels. I've just been liking the M4 more lately. I do like the extra 2 modules for the flexibility. Right now I'm running the VX, COD, EG3/4 and SL2x. The M4 allows me to cover all the ground tonally I need right now. But, I use the Mod50 a lot for gigs because it's portable and sounds killer. 2 modules at a gig is plenty- no one notices anyway.

Get what you want because if your like most of us, you'll end up buying it all in the end anyway. ;)

So here's my Pros / Cons for each:

Mod50 Pros:
  • lightweight
    parallel and series effects loop
    low power switch
    "percieved mojo" of a head
Mod50 Cons:
  • not stereo
only 1 set of power tubes
    only 2 spaces
RT2/50 Pros:
  • stereo
    midi switchable
can have 2 different sets of power tubes
RT2/50 Cons:
  • heavy as hell
    requires a rack
"percieved lack of mojo" of a preamp / power amp

For me...I do feel the Mod50's power section has a different vibe vs the RT2/50 some..but both are dripping with Mojo. I have both...as does muudrock...and I agree with him 100%. I love my M4 / RT2/50 setup mainly cause I use it in stereo w/ 2 cabs for that amazing separation, with ping pong delays...stereo phasers, flanges, rotary speakers sims, etc.

One thing I do love about the Mod50, is I don't have to buy a CAE line Mixer for it...since it has both a series and parallel efx loop built in. I had to buy one for my rack rig so I could do both series and parallel effects. After switching to do both, I absolutely love it...and couldn't see doing anything different...but that's me...YMMV.

Hope that helps.

Yep,what these guys said :D They all have MAJOR MOJO,But they do have different mojo, that being said,I happen to love the one I'm playing at the moment the best

ahahaha...sorry man! :) It's just heavenly jamming in front of it...when you have a stereo patch just panning L/R and you're standing in the middle. What delight I'll tell ya!!
