MOD 50 hi/low power

Is there a noticeable difference?

Not considerably, but the low power does have lower headroom, which is cool if you want to push the power section at a lower wattage. It's really noticeable when I use the THD Yellowjackets w/ EL84s. I really can push them into power tube distortion much earlier than on high power mode.

The low power is actually louder at lower volumes  , but I noticed that when I got the head. I like recording on the low power setting. Live I use full power and a 4X12.
Tone is a little fatter on low power and like Eric said, less headroom so more compression from the power section. There isn't a night and day difference, but it's there.

Hummmm....That's what I thought also, but didn't want to sound too stupid

So, I just got the Mod50 to "Backup" my M4 rig (at least that's what I told the wife). Of course now I want to be able to run all 6 modules. Is there an easy way to do that without dragging the rest of my M4 rack around with the power amp in it? That's the biggest thing - if I can loose the power amp - my achin' back says it's got to go...

And I know I asked before but I just had one of the module tubes go bad - I feel like I should replace all of them - had the M4 since '06 - some don't seem to sound as 'good as they used to' - retubed Peavey 50/50 6-8 months ago (always once a year). Even after power amp tubes, I felt something wasn't quite the same, esp VX.
However, the rig gets lots of use. Gig Friday and Saturday every weekend all year - rehearse 2-3 times a week and general playing all the time...

I have -

DLX
VX
SL
SL2
EG3/4
EG5

Do you really need all 6 monules at a gig? I see a friend who gigs with a large cover band doing three sets a night with nothing but his Marshall DSL and some basic pedals. I prefer keeping it simple so I also would not want to preamp/effects/power amp set up. I love just having the Mod 50 and a pedalboard. I would love the E2...but in reality it is more to carry around.

"Need" is so subjective....

Probably not all 6, but I do use all 4 in the M4 right now...

I also play in 2 cover bands - material runs the gamut. Could I make it with just 2? Sure. But what the hell, all this Egnater goodness needs to be heard!

You need a way to route the signal to two amps...an AB/Y can do this obviously..but you also need a way to switch the M4 in and out of the series loop of the MOD50.

I settled on a GCP/GCX Switcher to do this...expensive..but flexible...I bought both units used for pretty good prices....I have two M4s now and still room for more plus FX etc.

There's also Axxess Electronics stuff (GRX4?)

..of course, all of that is more gear to carry..you'll need 4 rack spaces (power, GCX, M4)

The ideal solution appears to be the Egnater E2...two modules plus switching built in and self-contained option but it's not available yet :D

I run 2 heads at some of the bigger venues--Mod 100 and Mod 50. I have a few different head switchers, but lately have been preferring the Lehle. Clean and silent. But it is a big rig to haul around.
I will be honest though and say 9 times out of 10, I don't need the other channels. But 2 heads does look nice on stage :D .
Anyway, Most of the time I take the Mod 50 and thats it. I take a blackheart 5 watt head for a backup. I just find that 4 out of 5 people at the venue surveyed could care less if your guitar sound is dead on to the original--as long as it's close no one (except the other guitar players hanging out in the back-with arms crossed) would even notice....
I do most gigs with the Mod 50 with VX or SL in first slot and SL2 or EG3/4 in the 2nd slot. A few pedals and a rack fx unit in a small rack and I am good to go to cover a TON of sonic ground.

Oh, and I am waiting patiently for the E2. That will end up being an important of my rig.

That's sweet, I want to own a mod100 one day..

To joe: There are a few ways you could go about that, and it depends on your setup and how complex you want to make it. What's your effects situation like? You can go ahead with a GCX audio switcher or the switcher that Mario at Axess Electroncis makes, the GRX4. If you just want to keep it small and simple, you can use the ABCadabra by Sound Sculpture. I have one that I'm going to use just for that purpose. I want to have the mod50 and m4 be able to be their own rig, but also come together easily if i wanted to. Same for whenever the E2 comes out. Taking this modular thing for all it's worth!

I'd like to keep it as simple as possible - I gig every weekend Friday and Saturday. Haul this stuff around to setup different venue each week - most times different venue both nights. So I'm looking for a sensible solution...as if 12 channels is even 'sensible'

I'm running the M4 into a Rocktron Xpression, http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/ind...dID=251983837&albumID=965873&imageID=10958410then to PV 50/50. Guitar runs to a floor board - http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/ind...dID=251983837&albumID=965873&imageID=10958415
There's a sennheiser wireless tucked underneath.

Here's the kicker - I haven't had much time to even play the new MOD 50 yet! Really only 1, maybe 2 free nights a week before I crash from regular job, to work on it - damn real life sucks!

I think eventually the E2 will probably fix it - I can live with 4 modules I guess

I detect some difference with the 4212. I really like the full power 100 watt cleans- Clean, loud, ringy headroom. Switching down to ten watt distortions doesn't change the volume that much, but it does add to the overload factor- It sounds to me like there is more compression in the distortion. I doubt that it makes much difference live, but it is the kind of detail that I think about when recording.
