So, recently I've discovered an issue with my amp and I am wondering if anyone has seen this? I put a call into Egnater last Monday. But haven't heard back from them yet. Sorry for the long back story.

The other day, I wanted to A/B the tone suck and/or feel difference between using my G System and plugging in direct. I also acquired a few modules from guys here and wanted to test them without anything in between. So, I unplugged everything from the amp except a guitar, turned the amp on, took it off standby and starting to play. After 20 seconds or so, the signal seemed to crackle a bit, then cut out completely. I quickly turned off the amp, checked the speaker cable with a cable tester, did the same for the guitar cable. Turned the amp on, same thing. Swapped cables. changed guitar. Same thing. Opened the cabinet, tightened the speaker connection, jiggled the wires to the speakers with the amp on, re-seated tubes, tapped tubes etc. No difference. Sometimes it took a minute, sometimes 10 seconds, sometimes it was immediate. I haven't swapped any tubes yet.

I could hear the amp's signal through the speakers when i turned it on and off. If I turned the amp all the way up, I could hear the signal crackling through the speaker. So I plugged cable into the send to test if there was preamp signal into the G. Yes there was. I then plugged the output of the G back into the loop and the amp returned to normal operation. Full signal, no cutting out. Played for 10 minutes, tapping tubes, jiggling wires. Couldn't make it cut out. As soon as I unplugged the loop, same behavior as before. The next day, I left the G in the loop and used the amp normally for an hour or so without issue. I unplugged the loop. Same as before.

A search through the forum brought me to a post by richedie about blowing through EL84's. So I pm'ed him (thanks for the response, BTW), thinking that this may be tube related. But, now I am not sure what to do. Low power, full power makes zero difference, and everything works when I have something in a loop. It is only occurring when nothing is present. The head is less than a year old, and I love it. I was hoping someone here might have had a similar issue and found a resolution from Egnater. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

-Chris

I haven't had a lot of luck getting a hold of Egnater USA. Try giving Frank a call at the Amp Lounge. He should be able to help you out.

I had a similar issues. If I tapped my fingers on the top you could also hear it in the speakers. I found that if I took the module out and put it back in and tightened the thumb screws it fixed it. I think it was an issue with the Module not seating in the slot the right way and being correctly grounded with the thumb screws. That was my issue, similar sound problems.

Are you using the G in the series loop?

First thing I'd think of is the switch on the send jack isn't closing properly when you remove the cable so the pre-amp signal is basically interrupted or intermittent.

That's where I went too. Check just running a cable in the effects loop, from send to return, no device in between. If everything works with the cable in place, you've found your problem.

I've had the same problem for a while, just haven't gotten around to spraying out the jack plus I always have The G-System in the loop so it's not always an issue. I have a short patch cable handy to plug in the series loop if I'm not using it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I won't be in a position to go to the studio for a couple of days. But at least I'll have some ideas on how to attack the issue.

Best,

+3 this is probably what's going on. Get some contact cleaner spray it in teh send and return jacks of the MOD 50 take a cord and work it in and out of the jacks about 10 times.

Most likely just the normalling contact on the Return jack. Got to Guitar Center and get one of the really good contact cleaners. Caig Labs makes on called R5. It is the one in the red label can. Just spray a very small amount into the send and return jacks. Push a plug in and out of the jacks a few times. Repeat. This should fix it.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Unfortunately, contact cleaner didn't do the trick. The jack works fine when I complete the loop with a short patch cable. I also tried Russ's original suggestion and changed each 12AX7 with a working one. No good. Same with re-seating and swapping modules.

Bruce, sorry for pointed questions via the forum. What is the warranty period for a Mod50 (I received the head in July)? Are the any authorized repair shops in the NY/NJ metro area to do the wty work or do I need to ship it direct to Egnater? If possible, can someone from your company contact me offline or should I just send in a support form via the website?
