Can anyone who has used both tell me what the tonal differences are?

I think a lot of guys will tell you that they are pretty similar. For me, I'm a much bigger fan of the M4 RT2/50 set up. The power section is just better IMO and makes the modules sound more organic and amp like. Plus, you get a lot more options with that set up.

I'll chime in here too. The Mod50 has an incredible power section. In my experience, with all the modules I had with it, it felt and sounded like the Mod50 power section was built to complement modules like the SL and Bman, and the like. Mainly the more Marshall type flavors. When I moved to the M4, it took me getting a really nice power amp (VHT) to get the same kind of vibe. I've not owned the RT 2/50, but since moving to the rack based setup, I've not been happier with my tone. I definitely don't feel like I'm missing anything, not having an actual head. I think in the end, the differences are small enough that it boils down to: do you want 2 modules or 4 modules. Can't go wrong either way.

Hey Steve.....

I've had both set ups.

Frankly, I don't believe there is a marked tonal difference between a MOD50 and a M4+RT2/50 rig that are tubed with the same brand of pre and power tubes. The RT2/50 is basically two MOD50 power sections in a rack mountable power amp.

I had two MOD50s, two M4s and a RT2/50 at the same time and A/B'd them, so this comes from first hand experience.

FWIW, I ended up selling the M4s and RT2/50 and now just have the MOD50's. Why you ask? Because heads look cooler and are a hell of a lot easier to transport than a rack rig.

Hey, thanks for the input guys. Very helpful
Right now I'm running an M4 into a TC G Major 2
And then into the return of a Tweaker 15 head then into
a Tweaker 1x12x can with a scumback H75. It's pretty sweet.
But I do wonder about a different power section at times.
This seems to answers my basic question though.
The consensus seems to be that both the Mod 50 and the
Aforementioned M4 set up are pretty much on par tone wise.

Yeah, I've found 'em to be pretty comparable over time... I just did the opposite of rlord... switched from a pair of MOD50's to a rack rig with an RT2/50. Mostly 'cause I figured it was easier to haul a slightly bigger rack than two heads plus a smaller rack. But hey, goes to show that all this stuff is basically interchangable... probably more a question of "what format works better for you?" than "what format delivers the tone?"
