Mod 50 vs Mod 100

A few questions again sorry...

With the Mod 100, you can have say 2 6L6's and 2 EL34's right?

So, can you do one of each in the mod 50? Or if not, put a THD yellow jacket in one to do basically the same thing?

Thinking i'd prefer the the mod 100 simply for this option if the mod 50 can't do it.

Any help would be great, thanks

Adam :)

As long as you swap out matching pairs... it's ok to have 6 6L6's with 2 EL34's, or 2 6550's with 2 EL34's, but not 1 EL34 with 3 6L6's.

FWIW, I used to run my RM100 with two EH EL34's + two SED 6L6's... thought it was truly the best of both worlds.

I'll just add for what it's worth that if what you are seeking is the sonic middle ground of the EL34 and the 6L6 many of us have found a very happy place using Tung Sol 5881. Great tubes. So if you don't need the third module and the extra pounds ...

So using the 5881's is a good compromise between the 2? That sounds great!

Why Tung Sol and not some other valve company?

Sorry for all the questions

Any other links to UK sites that stock good 5881's would be appreciated

Watford valves Tung Sol's are £65 each! Is that normal?

Everyone elses seem to be about £10-£15

Yeah Tung-Sol 5881s are THE tube in the MOD 50 (and Id guess MOD 100). Like Tommy says, great mix of EL34 and 6L6. Very full, lots of bite, great punch, just enough sag. I cant express how night and day the difference is to me with them. The only other 5881s Ive tried are the Sovteks and they are just too clinical and sterile sounding to me. I havent tried any other because after I put the Tung Sols in I didnt see the point.

Just guessing, but I would bet that the Watford Tung Sols are NOS which are old tubes but many say sound better and last longer. The one's we use are the "reissue" Tung Sol made by New Sensor I think. Just go with the new production tubes as they sound tremendous.

Sorry can't help you with any UK links. You may try http://www.dougstubes.com or http://www.kcanostubes.com and they may ship to the UK. Good Luck. The 5881 is a really great mix of the two tubes.
