Mod Recommendations

I imagine you get a lot of n00bs to the Egnater world on here, so my apologies up front :D

I recently spoke with Jeff through email concerning recommendations for a Mod series amp. Due to my musical tastes and involvement being so varied, I'm seriously contemplating getting the M4 to have 4 channels with one amp. Although, I could always A/B the Mod50 with my 65 Twin using the Mod50 for light/medium and medium/heavy OD and the Twin for, well, what it does best.

I guess my biggest question at the moment is which heavier mod is the best? I've scoured this board before signing up and it seems that the 3/4 and 5 always top the lists, with an occasional MHG up there and the E/Rect always towards the bottom. The rectifier saturated sound is what I want (without buying a Mesa, mind you), but there seems to be a lot of neg vibes about the E/Rect. What do you all suggest?

Welcome to the board,Can't go wrong with the EG5,it's pretty heavy!!1

The Erect is a great sounding module. The difference between it and the EG modules is that the latter have extremely liquid lead tones on tap. The EG5 is a favorite because it has a tight, crunchy sound on ChA while ChB has a singing, compressed (in a good way) lead tone. The Erect is actually fairly open sounding for a high gain sound to my ears, and as far as I know the circuit is the same on both channels. It's a great fat rhythm sound, definitely sounds like a Rectifier, but it doesn't have the ridiculously lead-friendly feel of the EG5 ChB (and to be fair, not much does - I used the word "ridiculous" for a reason!)

Remember though, there's always overdrive pedals that can add those characteristics to taste. A couple of guys have had their Erect tweaked by Dave Friedman and like the results. I may do the same!

I've noticed a lot of people mentioning their DF mods...Do you know exactly what he does to the E/Rect?

I'm primarily the rhythm guy who does the occasional lead riff here and there, so I may be ok with the E/Rect and just hitting it with something like a Keely Comp when I need a boost and compression.

I wonder how the VX would sound being hit with my OCD...mmmmmmmmmmm

He makes it more aggressive!

I like my Erect. I have had it dialed in and matched with my MKIII. I have also gotten a good Enter Sandman tone, and I really do not like Metallica. Also will do Santana (black magic women)running Ch A Clean and hitting it with a Maxon OD808. Pretty wide range if you like Mesa.

EG5 is great for 80's to metal. right now I am trying to hit the XTC sound for AIC "Man in the box".

I have all the Mods except the MHG and they are all great and have there place. I wouldn't get rid of any of them at all.

Hope that helps.

I've been playing Mesa's for a long time and can say this about the Erect: I don't find it to be as saturated as either the EG5 or MHG. It's more aggressive but it "feels" like it has a smidge LESS gain than those other 2 modules. I just traded it to a forum member for an EG3/4.

My general feeling with the Egnater stuff is, if you want Marshally tones but better, or more specifically, Egnater tones from the IE4 for example, then stick with the EG5 or EG3/4. You should probably have both of those. Add the MHG to that list. It's my favorite mod by far. You'll need a clean tone so get a T/D and be done with it.

I don't know anything about the other mods because these are the ones I have. But the bottom line is, if you really want a decidedly Mesa Recto tone, you may want to consider a different amp. Not dissing the Eggie stuff. I sold my Mesa Road King II to get an M4. But the Erect mod doesn't sound or feel much like Channel 3 or 4 from the Road King or any Dual Rect I've played. It's "similar" in that it's very aggressive. Now, if you like the "fizzy" quality of the Mesa Recto, you definitely won't want the Erect. The Erect, for all it's aggression, is not fizzy. That's a good thing.

And after all that rambling, I'll say this: You may want to take a shot at an Erect and swap some tubes in it, maybe change the cap and get where you want to be. But that's up to you. I think the reason the Erect mod is lower on most lists here, is that typically, the user base here doesn't come from the Mesa camp as much as it does the Marshall camp.

Just look at it as it's own thing and start trying modules without any pre-conceived notion of what they "should" sound like.

Forget about all of this modding stuff until you try a couple of stock Egnater mods.

If you can't get a stellar sound out of a stock, high gain Egnater module, regardless of whether it's an Erect, SL2, EG5, MHG, etc, you need to seriously look at your playing and/or your other gear.

Since I wasn't using it much, I sold my E'Rect (and regretted it instantly) to a guy on the board here who has a ton of amps and a great metal band in Sweden - he was very stoked about the Egnater version. This guy is a pro player with great gear and ears - and studio chops. Res ipsa loquitor.

I definitely appreciate all the consideration and advice. I really like the way dfrattaroli clarified the difference between an actual Mesa Rectifier and the E/Rect module, and to be honest, I like that it (evidently) reproduces some of the aggression of a rectifier without the noise and "fizziness." I do like the sound of a rectifier, but I would change to an Egnater amp in a heartbeat if it meant better tone.

I just want a good, aggressive high-gain sound in a versatile amp - something Egnater seems to be a champion of. Musically, our group is much like Breaking Benjamin, but without their currently severely dropped tunings - We're just dadgbe and sometimes open D tuning variants. I also play in a worship service that's themed around modern rock, and I like the idea of the M4 because I can get the VX module to run my OCD in front of and get those radio-pop-rock type tones as well. I need versatility for the worship group more than anything
