Mod50 head preamp tube not lighting up like the others...

...is this normal?

For the first time since I bought it, I'm checking the preamp tubes because of a crackling/static like noise I was having.

I removed the covers, and noticed the second tube ( V2? ) from right to left, looking from the back of the amp, was kind of dimmed compared to the other two...Is this normal? what does V2 do? Or, can you tell me what's the purpose of each of the 3 tubes?

Of course I didn't notice this earlier, because the tubes are covered...to me the amp sounds fine, but if this isn't normal maybe what sounds good to me might sound weird to another Mod50 owner.

I placed a 12Ax7 where the dimmed at7 was, and still was dimmed out...can I do that ax7/at7 swap?

Thanks Russ...I think your explanation was exactly what I wanted to hear...straight to the point. Can you recommend some tubes for those spots.

Now what's left, is to find out if its normal for that tube (V2) to be more dimmed that the other two. Jeff?

Check to see if it's just the way it's facing. If it is sitting in the amp/tube socket with the label (painted part) facing you it might just appear to be less illuminated than the other.


Most good tube retailers, like Tube Depot etc. have tubes designated as "balanced" indicating a good choice as your phase inverter tube.
 
There are many preamp tubes that dont appear to light up like others. That is normal.

In regards to the P.I. tube, the whole "balanced" concept is mostly marketing hype. There really isnt much of any benefit in spending more to get a balanced P.I. tube.
 
But, is the v2 tube thing normal?

I looked a it from different angles, replaced it with others, and still see the same thing...

Try replacing it with ones that you know have visible light from other spots.
