I got a MOD50 and lately I have experienced that the sound of the amp suddenly cuts out. That is to say that there's a low very distorted tone comming through. I played the amp last night and the tone went out, but it came back after a minute or so. I know nothing about amps so can anyone tell me what I might be facing?

Probably just a tube issue

Does it do it on both modules ?

If yes then it either the power tubes or pre
Tubes in the Mod 50

Check modules first then power tubes

The problem doesn't depend on the modules as it can happen with different modules and it's not affected/bettered by changing channel from one module to another. I should look into getting some new tubes then.

Thanks for the help.

Well, you can try cycling them a bit with a plug. I'm sure some have sprayed contact cleaner in there, but that could be messy. I pulled the chassis to do mine. To test you can just jumper the loop with a patch cable and see if that resolves the problem. If so you know it's the jacks.

Clean the serial loop jacks/switches.

How is this best done? I'm really not a techie

Before pulling the chassis out, just insert a standard cable from your fx loop send to fx loop return. If it is dirty/oxidized jacks this should send signal through. If this method cures the problem, remove the cable and spray some Deoxit or contact cleaner on on of the ends and plug it in/out of the jacks. This usually cleans the contacts unless they're really dirty/broken. Also, always be careful when working with electronic components. Good luck!

The problem is now solved and the culprit was a worn out jack cable so nothing wrong with the amp :)

Thanks a lot for your contribution to solving the problem! It's so great that there's helpful people on the net.
