Hey Guys

I have a MOD50 head and after 4 months of frantic power tube swapping have settled on Tungsol 5881 as my main tubes and JJ 6V6 as a strong fun second. I am hording modules like crazy and have yet to find one I dislike ha. I am not totally tonally thrilled with my speakers. I am using a Mojo tone 2x12 (looks like a mini Marshall 4x12). I have a Hellatone 60 and Hellatone 30 in it. Basically aged v30 and G12H30 from Avatar.

What I am missing is bright definition. I get a ton of low end good smooth warm tones but I feel some clarity and bite is out of the reach of the tone controls. I tried the head through my 4x12 Marshall with 75's (use this for heavy heavy stuff) and it sounds great but too tight and biting.

I am looking for speaker suggestions for Blues, Hard Rock and some Metal/Sludgy/Stoner Rock stuff. They will be in a 2x12 diagonal pattern in the Mojotone cab.

I think I read that Bruce tuned the Mod50 to v30's. Is that right???

Thanks
Ross

Hey tele,

I have that same cab. It's definately capable of being bright with the right speakers. Never really cared for any of the "30" series of celestions. Just not my tatse but I know others do. I think Jeff mentioned that he likes them, while Frank prefers the CL80, Classic Lead 80 Celestion and the Heritage 65, the new G12-65 type. I'm in the Frank school here becasue I used the Boogie 90 which is a CL80 derivative, and right now I'm using old Celestion G12-65. Another cool speaker I like a bunch is the Eminence GB12. It's a higher wattage (50) version of a Celestion Green Back. It has really nice high end chime. Very Led Zepplin. Speakers are tricky though man, you have to try a bunch before you find what works and then there is the fact that they change a lot over time. I bought Boogie 90, CL80, Eminence Tone Spotter, Cannibas, Swamp Thang, Weber 65, Tone Tubby Ceramic. Finally settled on the Emi GB and the old 65 Celestions. I am still looking though. I like to buy used off eBay becasue it's a better way to hear the speaker that is broken in. Speaking of which, how old are the 30's you are running? I here on other forums that they get sweet sounding over time.

The default speaker in the Egnater 2x12 and 4x12 is the v30. In my 1x12, Egnater recommended a classic lead 80 because it has a little more low end and is better for a 1x12 cab. And well...I LOVE my cab. I think it sounds much better with the MOD 50 than my Soldano 2x12 did (which had Soldanos version of the v30s with smoother highs made by Eminence).

The tuning has and is done with V30's and now the Warehouse v30s. Matt is right..V30s in our closed cabs and CL80's in the combo and 1x12.

Jeff

I would check out the Weber "Stan Spec" Pre-Rola clones or the Celestion Heritage 12M. They both sound great with my MOD100.

I personally just don't care at all for the V30....

I'm loving the Warehouse CL80s, they're full and defined in my 2x12 cab. I also like the Emminence Tonker and Man-o-war.

To me the Greenies and V30s have a lot of speaker breakup and fizz so they are out for me.

Warehouse dude just came out with a Greenback clone. I'm curious about those as I really like the V30 clone. Plus they are 100db so they should mix well with other speakers.

Tele, have you tried just one of those speakers at a time? You may want to do that to see if one or the other get at least close to what you are looking for. My guess would be the H30 would be closer.

The Weber 1225's with Pre Rola doping are really good as well.

Scumback H75 would be another good choice that should give you a good bite, but not harsh.

Good suggestions by all. I ordered a Warehouse Lead 80 and v30 clone. We will see if either get me where I want to be tone wise.

Buckeye, hahha thanks for the obvious suggestion. I am having one of those "duh why did'nt I think of that" moments. I will try that tonight. Not sure but just sticking a mic in front of each speaker I always pick the v30 over the h30 but that is not with out the other still wired up.

Yeah 3 Mile I remeber seeing your rig on TGP and saying we have similar taste is heads, cabs and guitars haha. Anyhoo, the v30 is about 6 months old but... the Hellatone process from Avatar ages the speaker before you get it. I put about 8-12 hours a week on the cab so that is what like 288 hours over 6 months?

Yep, your right, they come semi-broken in already and if you've put that many hours on 'em they should be right by now. I was lookin at Mojo Tone 1X12 this morning. The big cab is just breaking my back for rehearsals and stuff. Let us know how the new speaks work out.

OK guys I just spent about a half an hour with the Warehouse v30 in my Mojo 2x12 cab. So since it is like the mini 4x12 style cab i had a choice to put the Warehouse up top right or bottom diagonal left. I chose to put the Warehouse up top right to really hear it and I put the Hellatone 60 (aged v30) in the bottom diagonal left.

I must say first impressions are great. If anything I can conclude that the Hellatone 30 (aged G12H30) is not for me and he wrong speaker for the Mojo tone 2x12 mini marshall. I have also decided that the Mojo cab I speak of is a Bass beast in a good way. It really booms like an oversized 4x12 in a side by side.

I have also decided that although the Warehouse is not broken in I like the way it is tuned better then the Hellatone and the stock v30. I have the crisp attack and athourity I wanted but not the "honk" I associate with a v30. Next test is the Warehouse CL80 I am thinking I may like this speaker even more.

I am hot on the speaker trail boys but even though Egnater cured my amp GAS it has caused me some serious TUbe GAS and now Speaker GAS. SOOOOO many options but hey a 50 speaker or set of tubes sure beats a 2000 amp a month right?

Thanks for the report Ross. Im curious what you'll think of the CL80. In a well-made cab I think its THE speaker for use the MOD 50. I prefer the sound of my MOD 50 with the 1x12 Eggie cab to both my friend's Bogner 2x12 (w V30s) and my Soldano 2x12 (w/ Soldanos version of V30s). Believe it or not, I think the 1x12 sounds bigger than these two cabs. I know...unbelievable, right?

Holy Goats EWSEthan that is quite the claim. Have you tried 2x12 with CL-80s. If your 1x12 CL-80 slays a Bogie cab with 2x12 v30s then imagine the power of 2x12 CL-80s. Cripes. Jeff have you guys ever tried 2x12 CL-80s with a MOD50?

OK dudes I have done the Warehouse v30 vs Warehouse CL-80 vs Hellatone 60 vs Hellatone 30 my findings were...
All tested via MOD50 using 97 Les Paul Classic, 01 Am Ser Tele w/ custom wound Vinatge Vibe PUPs. Using VX, SL2, B'Man, T/D, ERECT modules. Played each configuration in a band setting with Bass, Drums, Other Guitarist and Vocalist.

- 2x12 Mojo mini 4x12 style with Hellatone 60 and 30: Dry, dull, flabby and dark and "low vlume output"
- Same cab with Warehouse v30 and Hellatone 60: Flabby is gone, High-Mid bite added (nice), Warehouse v30 sounds much "louder" than the Hella 60. Missing some bottom end has to bump up the Bass knob on every module.
- Same cab 2 Warehouse CL-80s: LOUD! Boomy bottom end and Sizzling highs. Sounded really scooped with ERECT and VX. Think and boomy with the others had to crank the MIDS nob up on all modules. Rattled the filling in my teeth haha.
- Same cab Warehouse v30 and Warehouse CL80: Just too weird for me. Sounded "transparent". Not a lot of body. Some boom and some honky but no thanks.
Same cab 2 Warehouse v30s: Best tone so far. Much more lively than the Hellatones. Lots of High-Mid definition. Pretty much need to set all tone knows to 12 noon (I can see that the amp is dialed to a v30 haha). Not as much bottom end as I may like when playing alone but with a band it is solid.
1x12 Avatar cab closed back Warehouse v30: Sounds like a PA horn hahaha "honky honkey donkey tone"
1x12 Avatar Cab closed back Warehouse CL-80: Had to push the mids up on all the modules but this is a good 1x12 tone! Lots of body for a 1x12.
Avatar 1x12 Hellatone 60 (v30): Best 1x12 tone in my test. Full warm and sounds bigger than a 1x12.

Bottom Line for me so far is the 2x12 cab and the Warehouse v30s. Still not toally satisfied. Wish The Warehouse v30s had a bit more low end authority. Maybe I am off to Scumback land next haha.

Bruce and I still love the Warehouse 30 speaker....I tried the H65's for quite a long time this week...with the proto type Rebel and I kept going back to the W30's. My mofo module and the Motor City PAF just kills with the Warehouse 30's. I can go from classic rock to full on metal with this set up! Ok back to building!

Jeff, I have a MOD50 head and a 2x12 cab in the next build. Can you run 2 2x12 cabs with the MOD50 head?

Absolutely. There are two speaker outs on the MOD 50.

I have a killer recording cab: its an oversized Egnater 1x12 custom fitted by Egnater with a Heritage G12H. Very rocking! Obviously, it can't handle the wattage of other cabs, but it sounds absolutely amazing. :)

EarCandy Sugar Cone speaker slaughters everything I have ever heard.

yeah I have finally broken in and settled down with the w30. I love them. Bottom end authority i was missing was just an eq knob tweak away with the MOD50. I agree the w30 is a perfect match. I tried the scumback h75s and sold them.
