I'm thinking ahead for when my MOD50 arrives. I want to buy a Port city 2x12 and fill it with the speakers of my choice.

I like Vintage 30s for my metal/hard rock side, but how would they fair for cleans, etc.?? I will be using the Deluxe, SL2, and EG5 modules most likely.

Would the G12H30s keep me content for heavy chunky rhythms?

Also, any thoughts on the classic lead 80s, or the Mesa version??

Any thoughts on which speakers have been successful for you guys would help as well. thanks,

-Joe

I know that the cab itself has a big part in the way a speaker will sound,I've seen great reviews on the PC cabs.I recieved an Egnater 112 with a CL 80 and nobody thinks that it's a 112   The speaker is very well balanced for the MOD,it sounds killer with all the modules, great lows, highs and mids.No spikey ear piercing wrench :D

I've always wanted to try that speaker. I'm just so used to vintage 30s, I'm not sure how the CL80's would work out. Would you be able to compare them to vintage 30s?

You know one of the classic pairings is a V30/H30 mix. Each speaker brings the best of both worlds and they do sound really good together. I have the V30 clone along with a scumback H30 in my 212 and it sounds terrific for clean and crunch with my Mod 50. If you are going with a 112 I'd go CL80, but for the 212, stick with the V30/H30 combo. Another option would be to get the cab unloaded and pick up some of the warehouse speaker V30 clones. They've gotten rid of that upper mid spike. Sound excellent for clean and crunch too. I know Jeff and Bruce really like them too. Good luck!

Yeah, for 212s Eggie uses V30s. However, the the 112 is a CL80 because the 80 has slightly better bass response and you need as much as you can get for a 112.

If you are going 212, stick with V30.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I actually have an Avatar 2x12 right now with the Vintage 30/H30 combo. I do like the sound, but wanted to try a newer cab to see if I'm missing anything lol. That and the Port Citys are supposed to be the shit.

I might even just pick up a Mesa 2x12 and be done with it. I do want to be able to achieve some classic tones as well, so that is why I was a bit apprehensive about Vintage 30s.

I'll most likely do a 2x12 with them though. I have always liked them, so I guess there isn't a reason to change necessarily. Thanks,

Just want to add that the wood of the cab is very important, not just the speakers. I guarantee that if you put V30s in most other cabs and compare it with the Eggie one, the Eggie will sound better. They use top notch solid birch and the construction plays a big role here as well.

Just an FYI. My Eggie 1x12 sounds bigger and better than a Soldano 2x12 I used to have (yes I compared then when I still had the cab). And Soldano makes a pretty damn good cabinet as well.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm pretty set on the Port City. I really haven't heard anything negative about them really.

Ted Weber's 1225 "Stan Spec" Pre-Rola clones sound incredible with the MOD100....IMHO they simply destroy the V30 in every possible way!

I had a 4x12 with those and sold it in one of my stupid "I need money!" moments.

I might just pick up some more. I really want to try and give vintage 30s a break for a while.
