Modded SL2X ???

Hi there

That's my first post there, so Hi all :D
After a rebel 20, I'm the happy owner of a M4 preamp, loaded with SL2X and EG5 modules.

As I can't get support from Egnater via email, I'm posting my question there.

I bought the preamp and modules used, the seller bought them new. I contacted the dealer, that confirmed this.

SO, the SL2X is strange, because :

- the X on the faceplate, is not the same as used for the SL2, you can clearly see that the X was added after.
- On the board itself, it written only SL2

But the dealer confirmed that the module was sold new as a SL2X... Serial is 09091401

Plus, some component seems to have been changed. For example, C5 is now a .680 WIMA MKS, where other caps are not WIMA.
Some other res and caps seems changed too...

Can you tell me if that module is a real one, and if it had been modded ?

From your description, it sounds like an SL2X for sure. Only one red Wima at C5.

Pics would help.

It's kind of tough to determine who modded it. Usually Jeff Hilligan would sign it JH. Perhaps this particular one was an SL2 that was modded into an SL2X at Egnater, but someone forgot to mark the inside.

Yes, WIMA at c5, and C18 seems changed too.
But if you say it's normal, then there is no problem :D

PS: any idea to make the module more brown, it doen't sound very well to me, for exemple my ADA classic on brown channel is more pleasant, more thight, where the egnater is more lose, especially in the high medium.
I'll try to record a sample, as soon as I'll receive my replacement sound card ;)
 
Try swapping pre amp tubes in it. What type of pre's are in there now??

What power tubes are you running??

they can make a really big difference.
 
The whole idea of the sl2x was to make it less brown. You might like the regular sl2 better. Especially I'd you're saying that you don't like the upper mids. Just a thought.

I bought it already loaded, I'll try to have a look at the SL2, but here in greece, it's kind of ... difficult ;)

But on egnater website, the SL2X A channel isn't supposed to sound like VH ?

That is an SL2X. May have been modified by us and we forgot to change the label on the board.

Just a small question, can I mod back the SL2x easily to a SL2 ?
I'm building valve amp, so knowledge is not a real problem, I just need some infos and values :D
