Modern Classic Rhythm Channel And Pedals

When I had my last Modern Classic I never used the clean/rhythm channel, just the lead channel and used the volume knob for cleaning things up. It worked perfectly. I am curious as to if any of you have tried to use the clean channel with various types of drive pedals for different types of sounds like Fuzzes, the Severe pedal by tonefreaks, etc... If yes, to what level of success?

I remember the clean channel about taking my head off like an old Plexi/Hiwatt should LOL. Seems like a better platform for pedals than the OD100's to me.

Thoughts??

I've tried it and it works surprisingly well. BUT, since the clean channel is so bright, the tone controls have to be adjusted accordingly. In turn, that results in settings not being optimal for the dirty channel.

So for a recording tool it would work well, but to use in a live scenario it sounds like it is really not feasible. This is fine as I like the Lead channel and volume knob for most everything original I am writing and we are playing. I do think if Rik tweaked this to be switchable for live use it would be a big plus.

Thanks for the input.

Couldn't you just use the neck pickup for cleans if its bright?

Certainly and it's a good kind of bright. Not a murky clean, brilliant yet rich at the same time. Nothing sterile here. I run fuzz pedals through my brothers modern and it's amazing. We never had to adjust the eq for his clean but I'm not sure what others are going for on there dirty tones. Also speakers play a huge roll in the clean tones or any tones.

Well, this thread is not about using the clean ch. for cleans, but for an alternative dirty tone w/pedals. The clean channel can easily be dialed in to be warm and fat, but this offsets the best dirty tones IMO. I replied to your PM at TGP as well.

I have an OCD version 1 and it works great in the clean and boosted clean on my MC100, and I can get a good balance between the channels to switch between them. First impressions for me with mine was the clean channel is brighter but it is also very articulate and clear sounding.

I never had much luck with the clean channel. It's definately alot brighter than the rhythm channel and the huge pop when changing channels is ridiculous. It made me end up selling the amp.

Really  was it an older model? I have a new MC100 and there isn't any popping when I change the channels or add the lead boost, foot switched or manually with the pull pots.

Nope, it was an '09. Mine popped manually and with a FS. If your's doesn't, it's one of the few.

Nah, Rick sorted these issues. It popped because the relay was grounded with the pre tubes.

Does anyone know exactly what was done to sort the popping?

I'd send mine back to Rick to get it fixed... but sending it from Australia to Canada would cost me the amp again just about

I did and his response was "it's caused by the large relays I use and it's the nature of the beast". I wasn't buying it. Especially after I asked both Mark Cameron and Jerry from FJA their opinions and they both disagreed.

Jerry fixed my pop. It was as quiet as can be when he changed the grounding.

Strange, misunderstanding maybe. For me nothing sounds better than a Wizard and I'm sure the new MTL will be the last amp for me.

Yes I am. I love Wizards, the great thing about tone it's subjective. Tried a couple of Bogner and a CAA 100w the other day and for me the Wizard is in another division tonewise.

I just traded into my first Wizard MC and it really is the best sounding flavor of Marshal I've played or heard.
Monster, Monster amp for sure.

The popping sucks though  . I hate to think it's gonna cost me $200 to have a $10 fix done.
The amp is also dumb loud when idling.

I gotta say, Rick emailed me back within a few hours, after hours about my questions. Give and take I guess.
