Module Tube Swaps

So I did a fair amount of tube testing today and module swapping around.

DLX - Had 2 Chinese to start off in there. Nice warm, smooth sound, but not enough bite on the top end. Tried a Jan Philips 5751 in V1, and a Tung Sol 12ax7 in V2, and holy crap that module came alive. The chinese were a bit too gainy in that module, as I lost a fair amount of headroom with them. The Jan Philips 5751 in V1 made that module smooth still but really make it very organic and warm, with that chimey / sparkly top end known from Fender amps. The Tung Sol in V2 made the module a bit thicker and deeper, with tight and responsive lows / mids.

COD - Tried the 5751 in V1 and TS 12ax7 in V2, and wow, that amp came alive. That combo brought in some lows that I've always been missing with that module. But not sub, rumbly lows. Moreso low mids. Did the same with respect to headroom and tone. Any fender based module, I'd recommend the JP 5751 in V1 and TS 12ax7 in V2. I did a lot of other preamp swaps to get to this point, and I will have to say, that's the best both of those modules sound!!!

EG3/4 - (I did change the cap from a 250pf to a 500pf a while back, and am liking that. I will probably get a 625 and a 750pf and try those out sometime, but I'm really liking the 500pf). I had started off w/ two chinese here. I just changed V2 to a Tung Sol 12ax7, and it lit up a lot too! The chinese in V1 makes it very smooth and organic, while the TS in V2 really helps beef it up just a bit, and make it growl!

EG5 - I have had a Chinese in V1 and a Ruby 12ax7a in here for a LONG time and have been loving it. I tried a Chinese in V1/V2 and didn't like it compared to what I started with. Adds too much mids, and makes the module too mushy. I then tried 2 Ruby 12ax7a's and it lost that smoothness from what I started with. Actually lost a lot of its punch too. Note to self...Ruby's don't sound good in V1 :). I then tried a Chinese in V1 and a Tung Sol 12ax7 in V2. Wow, it pulled the mids down just a hair (which i really liked!!) and again, brought the "beef" and punch that I didn't have before. I swapped back and forth from Chinese (v1) / Ruby (v2) to Chinese (v1) / Tung Sol (V2) about 4-5 times and jammed on them. I will have to say, the Chinese / Tung Sol really made that module even meaner!!!

I'll have to say, I'm really digging Tung Sols in V2 a lot. 4 out of the 4 modules I tested up to this point responded REALLY REALLY to the TS's in V2. The Fender based modules sounded great w/ 5751's in V1, and the higher gain modules sounded great w/ TS's in V2. I will have to say, so far for me, lower gain modules sound great w/ 5751s and higher gain modules sound great w/ Chinese 12ax7a's in V1, and the Tung Sol 12ax7 is a great tube for V2.

Just thought I'd share. Don't flame me for changing the EG3/4 again please :). I'm happy that's all that matters!

Thanks for good info Eric. I have been a fan of the JP 5751 for a while. I like it in V1 of the SL module as well. I have someTS preamp tubes on their way. Looking forward to trying them out.

I didn't get a chance to try them out on the SL yet. That's was the next module I'm gonna try them on. See what the JP 5751 / TS 12ax7 combo does for that. Definitely my favorite tubes are the JP 5751, TS 12ax7, and Chinese 12ax7a. I could do my whole rig w/ those tubes for sure. Need to try the JP 5751 in the reverb circuit of the Mod50 next :).

Anyone tried the 5751 in any of the preamp slots of the chassis of the M4 or the Mod50? A TS 12ax7 probably would sound best. I'll have to try that out :)

I run the JP 5751 in V1 of my Mod 100. I didn't like it so much in 50 because the 50 is slightly browner to begin with and that tube changed something in the overall sound that I didn't like. I do like it in th 100 though. Gives it a little mojo and dials the input gain back just a tad.

I could see that in the Mod50. I'm gonna try it for sure in my M4 :). At least in the slot that normally takes a 12at7, which I am running a JP 12at7 there now.

Again...this list is unreal. I was just thinking today that it would be cool if someone did a sticky with their favorite tube selections for a. power amps and respective power tubes and b. modules and respective preamp tubes.

I think something is buggy with my VX module and when I get a chance I'm going to post a video on youtube to get some input on the sound quality. It sounds like something is squashed and I'm not getting full output. The A channel sounds just o.k. and the chimeyness is coming through but definitely on the B channel it sounds like it's just firing on one cylinder (for lack of a better description. It's got sovteks in right now. Any recommendations for this module?

I think you posted earlier that you tried 12at7s in your COD to thwart early breakup in the gain. Still like these or your newest recommendation better. Right now I've got sovteks in this module as well and it's just not getting there. The attack seems just a little harsh and I'm not getting the openness, legato, butter sensation I'm looking for.

I'm playing through an RT2/50 > (2) avatar 2x12s one w/V30s and one with eminence legends.

great post...

I did make that post, and the JP 12at7s did sound good in there, but the 5751's sound better. They help raise the headroom in the modules some, but keep it sound killer. The 12at7s, which sounded great at first, started to wear on me a bit. They just felt a little stiff here and there, and didn't "pop" like 12ax7s do. The 5751s have a similar feel as in gain to a 12at7 (with a bit more...12at7's have about 1/2 the gain of a 12ax7, where the 5751's have about 70-75% the gain as a 12ax7). But, the pop and grind of a 12ax7. I really reall like the 5751s. It's like the best of both worlds man!

Awesome post eric!

I've got to admit, I still haven't swapped tubes. The thing sound so good, I'm almost afraid of opening that can of worms and all the permutations!

Still, at some point I know I will, so it's great to have some prior guidance. One thing that I love about this forum is that not only can you get good answers to questions, but that there are threads like these that start off to just offer up personal experiences or information.

Anybody try a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V1? I happen to remember that tube sticking out for me in V1 of a Mesa Recording Pre. As I recall it darkened the sound a bit. I think I may start messing with V1 in the EG5. That thing is a buzzsaw with the bright engaged but there is something in the highs I can't seem to dial out. Anyone else have any suggestions for V1 to darken it?

I don't really like the Sovteks much but sometimes they sound good in certain situations. I would try some Tung Sols in there, same with the Vox.
