Is there a resource where you can sort of dial in different amps/sounds using the various modules?

i.e., for Gilmour's basic tone, try module XXX at these settings X X X X X X X

and so forth, for VH, Malcolm, Santana, etc. etc. etc. ... or Dumble, Boogie and so forth.

I know half the fun is tweaking, but when you're thinking about which modules to buy, and how to run them, it could be a useful thing. Maybe it exists and I'm not finding it? Or someone could make a sticky and people can add to it? Seems like this info is scattered among the various posts.

Yes - would be fun as a sticky topic
Listing cool sounds that you have dialled in for others to try out
Not that we shouldn't experiment and enjoy the journey

I don't know if this topic can work.

I mean, I have to set my module knobs vastly differently depending on which tubes, guitar, pickups, speakers, cabs, power amp, power tubes, etc I'm using.

For example:

M4, EG5--->VHT 2150 power amp--->VHT 4x12 = treble @ 11 Oclock

M4, EG5--->Rivera TBR2 power amp-->Trace Elliot 4x12 = treble @ 2 Oclock

With this adjustment, the sound is fairly similar.

see what I mean? We are all chasing a sound in our heads, given our various pieces of equipment, and performing a balancing act with the knobs based on so many variables in the room, the gear, the ears, the audience, the humidity, the temperature, how old your tubes are, how bright your pickups are, how dark your cables are, et. etc .etc..

I hate to wreck the topic. I'm sorry :aww: :aww:

I totally agree here. Even just switching guitars makes things sound totally different.

I don't know...I haven't gotten mine yet, but I would think it would be a great starting point before tweaking...I know I'd love to hear someone's settings who thinkis they've nailed Jerry Cantrell's live tone

I don't think anyone can get it "exact" in any situation ... hell, the sound onstage is different every night, depending on acoustics, number of people in the crowd, etc.

But a Marshall plexi will sound like a plexi into various speaker configurations, etc., much as the preamp out on a Twin Reverb will sound like a Twin --- big shimmery clean -- into various power amps and cabinets.

It would help me to know, for instance, that I can get somewhere in the neighborhood of Carlos Santana's tone by using channel X of the COD module with the gain about here etc. etc. ... and then tweak it from there to taste. In the same sense to know that I can't really get that tone using an EG5.

Even to the extent of using an M4 preamp into a speaker simulator direct box for recording, you know?

Some of the folks who are experts with the M4 must be playing in cover bands where they have to cover Jamie's Crying, Interstate Love Song, Whole Lotta Love and Cold Shot in the same set, right?

Heres some real basics, but I agree with everyone else that guitars and pickups make a big big difference.

Vx Channel A: Beatles, Oasis, anything chimey and/or British
Vx Channel B: Queen "We Will Rock You" solo, All-American Rejects "Move Along", Foo Fighters "Best of You", Switchfoot
BMan Channel B: SRV, AC/DC
COD: Andy Timmons "Resolution", John Mayer Trio, Two-Rock / Dumble ish tones
T/D channel A: Alter Bridge "Broken Wings" intro
SL2: Guns N Roses "Appetite for Destruction", Jerry Cantrell "Boggy Depot" / Early AiC, anything JCM800 related
EG3/4: Early Van Halen (think JCM800 but more "brown")
EG5: Ratt, Extreme (3 Side to Every Story), later Van Halen, Motley Crue "Dr. Feelgood" and self titled, anything SLO-100 related
E-Rect: King's X "Dogman", Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Fall Out Boy, Killswitch Engage

If you are looking for XTC type tones, its like between EG5 / SL2 or EG3/4. Any can get you close enough.

The best starting spot is all knobs@ 12:00 and adjust to your liking. These modules are voiced so well that starting there will get you in the ballpark right off the bat. The rest is details and fine tuning to your rig.
Just my opinion, but it works for me.

Perfect! Thanks for sharing!

very well put, I'll try to continue a bit; Depending on the gain setting it makes a difference in sound too:

Sl2 channel A: can get that AC/DC crunch, and roll back the gain and/or your volume you can get a very cool clean sound.
Vx A: all Matt said, plus can get the edge kind of pushed tones/chime, as well as goo-goo doll sounds.
Vx B: well matt nailed it there again; Can get that all american rejects/jimmy eat world sound if you want.
DLX A: Very full clean that reacts well to pickup selector...Can get from nice full bodied glassy tone to even some "under the bridge" kind of playing with the right pups and EQ.

Every module that I have ever played through sounds great even when set at 12 o'clock.

Agreed.

I like this kind of input - getting good ideas about settings and module choices
Makes for an interesting read...

Now all I need is an M4

My settings for my Erect for these recordings - http://www.myspace.com/thelockoutmcr, are as follows....

Gain - 5
Bass - 5
Mid - 7
Treble - 6
Bright boost - 1
Resonance and presence - 5
Master - 8!!!

Guitar - Gibson SG with a Bareknuckle ceramic warpig

Cab - Mesa 4x12, Vintage 30's

Pretty brutal stuff Adam
I can see why the EG5 might not have been right for your stuff
Enough gain but not crushing enough
What are you using in your second slot now?

I use my SL2 in the second slot, channel A, as clean as i can get it, which is pretty nice, and channel B, a mild gain.

Jonathan, if you want a trip to Manchester, you're more than welcome to try out my Mod 50, just don't steal it
