I'm going to Chicago next week for a Plant Manager's meeting. I'm thinking about driving up and killing some time before the meeting. What are some cool guitar shops to check out?

I'll be staying in the Burr Ridge area. My sense of direction sucks too..... :D

Make'n Music, definately. I love that place. I heard osme people say the guys can be douchbags, but they've been nothing but nice every time i've been there www.makenmusic.com

+1

I've never been there, but I've heard only (mostly) good things. It was pretty much agreed at the last Chicago Ampfest that Make N Music is the go-to store for anything cool gear-wise in that area. It's definitely on my go-to list as well, though I haven't worked up the courage to stop by yet; I fear that if I go I'll walk out with something I can't afford :P

hey dave,

i always wanted to check out jcguitars in algonquin (chicago 'burb).. jcguitars.com. he needs to update his website, but he seems to have some cool stuff there (despite some questionable prices)

Maken is cool, but It's always really really depressing in a good way!

Dave! Take me man, I already have a place to stay for myself, we can hit up all the shops!!!

+1 for make'n music. they are pretty helpful for the most part. i can't really think of any other boutique places in chicago. i mean, theres a guitar center off of halstead, but, ha, thats not cool.

Burr Ridge is real close to me....stop at The Patio and get some good ribs.

The Chicago burbs are pretty spread out....Make'N Music will take you a good 1/2 hour to get there, at least.

Obviously Make'n Music is the number one spot, but don't discount the guitar centers in chicago, they often get a hold of some really cool shit. They also just rebuilt a new one there and I hear it's pretty awesome. Last time I stopped in at the one off Halsted they had a wall of vintage plexi's, some vintage fender tweeds, a snakeskin SLO, a bunch of marks and some other cool shit. Schroeder guitars is also right next to Make'n and he's worth stopping in to talk to. He's chicago's man for blackfacing fender amps and general tube amp repair. Also makes guitars and stuff.

What about Chicago Music Exchange?

I forgot about this place, they have a bunch of used/vintage stuff right?

Like walls of old strats/LP's? I have to make my way down there again sometime.

Jc guitars in Algonquin. Kind of out of the way but some of the most badass stuff you could find.
