MXR EVH pedals (tone suck)

I had similar results with the EVH phase 90 as well!!!

Has anybody expirience a kind of tone suck when the pedals are off... I analyzed my signal chain and found these pedals to rob a loooooot of tone. I know its not true bypass, has anybody had similar expiriences?

I also have a coupe of mxr pedals that I use: Zakk OD, Carbon copy delay and they aren't as bad as this aspect. The carbon copy works pretty well..

I haven't had any major problems with the EVH Flanger or Phaser. There is a minor tone difference, but to me it's so minor that I could care less.
One weird thing I have noticed with the Phaser is that engaging the pedal seems to boost the overall volume a bit. Of course I may just be crazy.
If it gets to be bad you could always get a true bypass switch/loop.

Nico Toscani, your findings are true, the only fix is to have them true bypassed and a lot of those newer MXR pedals are hard to do due to the PCB construction.

you mean SMT PCB Construction

(Surface Mount Technology)

I've used MXR over 30 years, recently i had to replace a toggle switch on a Wylde OD, but other than that, no real problems.

I run a ZWo/d & a EVH phaser
Tone sucking levels don't bother me...but when recording I'll usually unplug the unused pedals. Live the tiny difference is not worth the hassle and expense of loops

Loves me an MXR EVH Phase 90, such a great sounding phase. :inlove:
I could see stacking a few tone sucking pedals would really start to matter.
I don't hear much of a difference with it in-line by itself and it's the only effect pedal that I use out front of my amp so it's fine...delay, chorus are all in the loop.

I truly hate what any pedal in front of an amp does to your tone....true bypass, buffered, whatever...they all suck IMHO!

I agree, but don't care as much as you I'm sure :D ....nothing feels better than plugging directly in.
Even with true bypass pedals, I assume all the extra added cable run changes the impedance effecting the tone/feel a bit.

UNLESS... You do what your crazy buddy Zach did....... and put them in a switcher.

I don't notice any change with my MXR EVH phase 90. I have it early in the chain right after the wah and tuner. This is my only MXR pedal. I have read that the bypass on MXR pedals in general is bad, but with just the one I have, its fine.

The original MXR pedals affected the tone when on and off...I personally like how they change the sound. EVH did as well. I find it funny when the EVH tone chasers complain about it and get all of their pedals changed to true bypass

have you played the new EVH Phase 90 and Flangers? That's what Nico Toscani is talking about. They are definitely tone suckers but I as well prefer stock old ones.
I got the new handwired phase 90's and after tweaking the sweep, it sounds very close to my original 74. My original 78 phase 90 still has more pronounced phase sound. All of them suck tone and I prefer that tone suck sometimes.

the EVH ones don't suck any tone at all
Fuck no! It breathes out EVH fairydust onto your playing.

You know...I had a EVH Phase 90 before and I sold it cuz it sucked tone....now I have another and this one doesn't bother me.  Nice quality control MXR.    haha

Are you guys running a buffer in front of your pedal chain?

On my board with the MXR EVH phase 90, its all true bypass but my Maxon OD-808 (not sure if it has a buffer or not). So no buffer before the phase 90. I could change my tuner out to my trusty Korg DT-10, if I need a buffer. The DT-10 has a nice buffer.
