Episode 55: Boss RV-6 Reverb

It's not everyday you get to review a NEW Boss pedal! This year, the Boss RV-6 was added to to the RV compact pedal series. Like I said in my RV-2 Review, Boss has the distinction of making the first Reverb pedal (or at least 'digital' reverb pedal). So how does the RV-6 stack to to the rest of the series?

Thus far, I've only reviewed the RV-2, so the famous RV-3 and RV-5 are still waiting in the wings to get reviewed. But, I do know both of those pedals well, and I feel comfortable making comparisons.

The RV-6 is a very full functioning reverb pedal with a lot of modes. It shares many of the modes from the RV-5, with a few exceptions. Gone is the 'Gate' mode; added are the 'Dynamic', 'Shimmer', and 'Delay' modes. It's nice to see the 'Delay' mode back. It also adds some reverb, so was probably pulled from the reverb/ delay mode on the RV-3. Also, I don't miss the Gate mode... at all.

The two modes that we haven't seen before are the Dynamic mode and the Shimmer mode. The Dynamic mode is supposed to react to your playing, making sure that the reverb never buries your dry signal. I found that mode to be a little too 'subtle' for my tastes. The 'Shimmer' mode will be instantly recognizable to Boss PS-3 Pitchshifter/ Delay fans. Shimmer on the RV-6 takes PS-3's 'mode 7' and adds some nice reverb to it. It's pretty cool, but I still prefer the PS-3 for that effect.

My favorite mode is the Modulate mode. It adds some awesome modulation to the reverb. Very cool for creating soundscapes.

And finally, the Hall, Plate, Spring, and Room settings sound just awesome. Exactly like they should sound in a Boss Reverb!

The pedal has a stereo in and out, as well as an added expression pedal input that allows you to control the depth of reverb on the fly.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the Boss RV-6 Reverb. It packs a ton of functionality, adds all your favorite modes from the RV series of pedals, plus the Shimmer mode from the Boss PS-3 Pitch Shifter/ Delay. If you can't own every Boss Reverb pedal, the RV-6 is a great option to have. The RV-3 might be my favorite, but the RV-6 is much more versatile, and does a lot of things right.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but have you had a chance to review the RV-5 and compare it to the RV-6?

Modulate on the clip for the rv6 really stuck out to me, sounds great. Read that boss started from scratch on the algorithms for the rv6. How does the rv 6 take dirt, like save a boss bd2 in front of it?
