About halfway through rehearsal this evening, my Rebel 30 died. I wasn't playing particularly loud - maybe around 2-3, and we're almost to the end of "Murder by Numbers", and the head just drops out. I check everything - make sure my speaker cable is good, remove my volume pedal, deja vibe, and Boss vf1 from the front of the amp and the fx loop. I try a cable straight into the amp - no good. Toggle the power to standby for a few seconds, then back to the PLAY position - no sound; switch from the Gain channel back to Clean, no sound. I try a different guitar cable thinking my cable went bad - no sound. I place the amp in standby, let it idle for a 5-10 minutes, then power off - swap the speaker cable, let it warm up again for a few minutes, switch the Power back to the PLAY position -nothing. Totally dead. I bought this pretty recently in January 2010 from Musician's Friend so I'm pretty sure I still have warranty coverage. Aside from checking the fuses, I have no idea what to check next. The only spare tubes I have are Electro Harmonix 12ax7's, and I tend to think if it's an issue with tubes that it's going to probably an issue with power tubes. Again, I'm not the authority on tube amp troubleshooting, so I could be wrong here.

Check your fuse first. Then preamp tubes. Had the same thing happen to me on my Rebel 20 about 7 months in. It ended up being a preamp tube, had a small hairline crack that toward the bottom of the tube that finally caused it to fail. Not sure if this is true or not but if the power tubes fail, you'll still get a little bit of noise out of the front of the amp when it's on, if it's a preamp tube you'll get nothing, just silence. This has been my experience but I don't know if it applies to all tubes amps etc. Best of luck.

If you do a quick search on this forum, you'll see that a lot of people (including myself) have had this very same problem. So, I'm presuming that the amp's lights were still lit? I'll bet you anything that you did blow a fuse, most probably because a power tube blew. I think the power tubes Egnater ships with the Rebel 30 are of dubious quality, because mine all blew within a few months. I've swapped them out and haven't had an issue since.

Just follow the directions in the manual for checking the fuse and power tubes.

Hey Guys,

If you have any issues or questions please give Nate or myself a call at 323-277-4119 or email either of us at Nate@eganteramps.com or john@eganteramps.com We use Ruby Power Tubes and Sovtek preamp tubes in the Rebel series. We offer a 90 day warranty with tubes because tubes can just go bad so feel free to give us a call for help. Thanks

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions. Nate at Egnater has been very helpful with my Rebel 30. I dropped an email to the Egnater support address probably around 10pm PST time last saturday. I was surprised to see a reply at 1am his time! Anyways, they are helping me out on this and it does appear that one or more of my power tubes has/have failed. I picked up some fuses this morning so I'm going to try and determine which ones have failed when I get home later on. I am VERY thankful that the fast blo fuse did its job in protecting the circuitry and other innards of my amp.

It's a bummer that current production tubes have to be so damn spotty

When every other topic is "My new Egnater is dead", it looks bad for Bruce & Co.

The truth is, it's like this on every amp forum you visit.
Tubes just fail at anytime. It sucks.
