So last night I went out to Guitar Center to pick my Rebel up. Steve, the sales guy I always deal with, actually called me when I was pulling into the parking lot. "Hey, man. Just wanted to know when you're showing up. We've all been dying to open this box up." So then he met me outside (they were pretty slow last night) and he was just as pumped as I was. "Dude, can we fire this thing up?!" So we plugged it into a JVM 4x12 and I grabbed a Les Paul. Two customers were already huddled around me waiting to see what this thing sounded like. Before turning it on I set the gain to about 4:00, power dimed, tube mix around 2:00, master at 10:00, and just had the EQ at noon. When I hit the open E chord you could see the "Fuck yeah!" on their faces. Other GC employees were digging it as well. So for the next 20 minutes or so I was noodling around, explaining all the features and whatnot. Then I let the guys that were standing around play on it a bit. Showed them the cleans, tube mix, how quiet it can get. Everyone was really digging it and always said, "Wow" after finding out it's $599. It was very cool to spread the gospel... Jeff, I'll be checking the mail for my commission check.
From GC I went straight to my band's practice space to really run it through the gamut. I was running it through an oversized 2x12 and it sounded massive. Since my band plays covers, I've gotta have some versatile sounds but I don't want to have to keep tweaking my amp throughout the night. So I dialed in a medium gain setting that cleaned up well with my guitar's volume and I am going to use a Fulltone Fulldrive II MOSFET in front. Just the amp alone covered a lot of territory itself (Toadies - Possum Kingdom, Jet - Cold Hard Bitch, Free - Alright Now). Hitting the Fulldrive gives me a nice overdrive to take me into higher gain territory (Pearl Jam - Alive, Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn). Then hitting the boost takes it over the top (Metallica - Fuel). I also tried Dan's (bbaug14) OCD. I had been wondering if I needed something like an OCD or MI Audio Crunch Box and hitting the OCD confirmed that. It sounds great in front of the Rebel and is much more versatile than the Fulldrive. After playing with the pedals a bit, I had the most fun just playing straight into the amp and seeing the territory it covered. Turning the gain up made it sound better than the Fulldrive and the OCD did. This thing just sounds incredible! No, it's not going to be my practice amp or my bedroom amp. This is going to be my gigging amp and it's going to leave chunks of the Line6 amps the guys in other cover bands in the area are using in its stool each night.
I can now say that I am finally a part of the Cool Kids Club and the proud owner of an Egnater amp. Thank you, Bruce, Frank and Jeff for making me sound awesome and thanks to John for the great customer service! Now I just need some guitar lessons to do the amp justice. Oh, by the way, I'd also like to mention that this is my first tube amp and that I've been playing through Marshall Valvestate amps for the last 10 years (Hey, I'm poor.), so you can only imagine my elation in this monumental sonic upgrade.
