Bruce, i wanted to thank you for designing an awesome amp. This amp truly can do so many tones....seriously, the more time i spend with it, the more i just love it and want to play it.

it keeps my GAS in check too..(i keep drooling over a fortin bones, but then....) when i want to, i can reference other amp tones and dial them in close to my sample clips, if not damned close.....but most of the time, i keep od1 and 2 dialed in the way i like them for my personal tone. im contemplating getting another one so i can run od1 and od2 at the same time and/or dual amp the channels.

mostly i've been running the contour buttons in and, usually the contour knob between 10-2oclock.
tonite, on od1, i took the contour out completely and tried dialing in some mid gain, vintage amp sounds, and i was REALLY surprised again at HOW many different sounds are in "THAT REALM" of od1. again, there are SO many freaking sounds in od1 and od2.

oh, and by the way, od2 DOES do the "brutalz"..you just gotta know how to dial it in and play the channel.

I have played this amp at the store and love it. I just don't need the weight and Power Grid: Set Wattage options. I'd love a smaller, lighter, less expensive 50 watt version.

the weight is ghastly. plain and simple.

the power grid...well....everyone can find a use for it. it's just that useful!

I can see how the power grid thing is cool. I just think lighter and cheaper is a good thing for all. so a little less would be nice. Egnater is kicking ass IMHO

It's a fabulous amp. It would be nice if they quieted down the line out, but other than that it is nearly flawless. My 335 through channel two is just balls-out the BEST!

wonder if a 220pf cap across the lugs on the output jack would solve any of the hiss and interference.

i have a bad ground loop in my fx rack, and plugged my line out into that!!! HOLY CRAP.... i was like, WOW, len is right..

then i figured out the line out wasn't as noisy as i thought due to the ground loop issue..but still..it is noisy.

i can live with it though..i just use the fx out.

Yeah I don't use the line out much. I mike it recording it. I don't think the amp is that expensive. You can get the 4212 combo new for about 1299.00- roughly what the 212 Renegade costs.

I am not a technician. What is a ".02 cap across the lugs on the output jack?"

a capacitor rated at 220pf (parafarads) or whatever it is. i say 220 pf because i did another mod for a pedal i have that reduces noise, hiss and emi/rfi interference. im not sure if it would work because that cap gets soldered across the lead side to the ground side. it actually sounds to me like this line out should have been xlr and one of the leads is off but bleeding sound through with noise.
Len, we'll figure it out! it might take a bit, but we'll get it!

i've seen some tourmasters listed on the used section guitar center website..and, judging that i've done my own "M" mod (minus the gain), i'd say, i'd get another one, one of the ones that are already modded with the "M" in front of the serial #...probably the head version for practice sake that i could just use with any cabinet.

do you use your contours on the dirty channels, or do you leave them out?

what is the M mod? I was looking at the used tourmaster heads, are the older ones different? any problem buying a used one without a M mod?thanks

the m mod is supposed to tighten up the low end in the gain channels, soften the harsh treble and increase the gain.

i did the treble and bass mod myself.

if the serial # has an "M" in the beginning, it's stock with the M mod.

if not, it wasn't stock with the m mod.

if it' doesn't have an "M" you'll know if it hasn't been modded, at least the combo, if you put the treble on the od1 or 2 channel above 2 oclock (in modern gain settings) and the presence above 3oclock, with your ear right in front of the speakers, you'll hear that warbly high end modulation while playing..at least i did. at high gain and higher treble and bass (above 12oclock) it'll also sound
muffly in the low end/low mids and really fizzy and crisp on the high end, ...pretty much the same at lower gain (where you think it would tighten up), with those same tone settings, your bass will be flubby and the treble will be really biting and fizzy.

it's the only thing that prevented me from loving my amp right off the bat. i'd strongly recommend getting a Modded one...just look for the M in the front of the serial number (on the back near the plug.)

even my wife could hear the difference and complimented me that she thought my skills as a lover improved because of the "M" mod.

;)

im sorry...if it's the combo, it should have the M at the end of the ser#
here's a pretty good recent vid, even though it's kinda one sided genre wise, the guys gives each channel a quick workout and shows you what kind of tones he gets for his style.

im gonna go make some noise right now!

thanks for the info. Can I do the mod myself, or would I have to send it to egnater? hey did you have a link to that clip? thanks again

my fault dude!
DOH!

unless you have the knowledge and skill to work on tube amps, ( i dont know what background you have in amplification) i'd advise you to find out where the nearest egnater service center is and have them perform the mod. it's not something that you can just walk through blindly (like working on a pedal or putting pickups in or shit like that). i educated myself about working on amps, and i have a basic background in electronics. even still, i was nervous as all hell at first.

there are voltages stored in amp capacitors that will kill you. not if, or when, WILL if you don't drain/discharge them and you touch them by accident. its not something to take lightly or go pussyfooting around in there blindly, for a fact. Bruce told me that, and i'm passing it on to you, in case you didn't know.

it goes without saying, you might find a used one that doesn't have the mod, or, in your opinion, doesn't need it. i played mine for 8 months (about 10 hours or more a week) before i decided i wanted to mechanically change the amp (other than pre and power tubes and switching cabs). there was something about the voicing of my amp, like i said above, that wasn't sitting well with my ear. again, you might find one that isn't modded and think its fine. they're GREAT pieces of gear, even without the mod...i just love to tinker!

I have the M Mod. The contours? Depends. I fiddle with them. Sometimes in, sometimes out. Generally prefer them out.

Thanks I am a hack, I love to tinker on my old marshalls but am not a tech. I'm listening to the clps and it seems OD2 has a mid scoop? can I dial that out, if I want? Have to play one of these but, for some strange reason? all the GC stores by me, (NJ) don't have one.

that video gives you a very, and imho, narrow and limited range of what the tourmaster can do, on that end of the spectrum with regard to that guy's playing style.

channel has a contour switch, which in essence, scoops the mids.

do you know how to drain the caps on your amps?

i'm good with draining the caps. Like I said, I mess with my marshalls all the time, for years. No formal electronics training (so I'm a hack ) but, I love messing with this stuff. I'm looking at used tourmasters, (money tight ) so I might have to do the mod down the road. I have to say, Egnater is the first amp, that I haven't felt the need to mess with(well almost I mess a little). I had a renegade and tweaker head. I've been waiting for a tweaker 40 but, the tourmaster looks like a monster, I want one!

i think if you email nate or ian, you can probably get the pdf file of the mod.

yes they have helped me out before with this kind of stuff, great guys IMHO. I'm just looking to get one used cheap. The only thing that I don't like about the Tourmaster is 60lbs for a head. I'm a big guy but also old, weight becomes more of an issue with every passing year

As for the record line out, per Bruce I stuck a passive direct box on it. Ahhhhh.... no more noise. I'm using a Live Wire model SPDI. Line level in, balanced out, it has ground lift, and an attenuation pad.

Great for the ole home studio. Mic a cab, and use the DI at same time, each to a different channel. Makes for nice big full sound.
