I've owned it for about 16 hours so far, and I'm still stuttering trying to find the right words to describe my amazement! Coming from the 101b, I wasn't quite sure what to expect; I bought the Twin Jet based off the hype surrounding it, and it was somewhat of a letdown (at least before converting to EL34s  ). I figured if people have been happy with the 20th for as long as they have, then maybe it was an improvement. Well, all I can say is that I wish I had gotten it sooner!!!

Next to the 101b, the biggest improvement is that every control does EXACTLY what it's supposed to do, every control is USABLE, and the tone is downright STUNNING! It seems that the 3 brightness switches have been moved maybe later in the chain so they're more subtle and don't change the gain structure as much. With the 101b, it seemed there was always a compromise on the red channel. B1 felt pretty good but got too compressed and fizzy, where B2 had a great sound but didn't have the gain for the right feel. The 20th? It feels sort of like B1 and sounds sort of like B2 from the 101b to me, but better!!

I've noticed the Excursion switches are far more effective as well. T for Facelift / Kill 'Em All tones, M or L for Alien Love Secrets / Black Gives Way to Blue tones. Another improvement is the level of gain between blue and red channels makes a lot more sense than before. With the 101b, blue boosted was very close to red unboosted. Now I can really have four different settings with the gain, and all are completely usable!

And as for the cleans? I don't usually use the clean channel, but it sounds like this was another big revision! Cleans sound lush and full; another huge improvement over the 101b. And Boost 1 now seems to add a bit of midrange, rather than additional volume alone. Perfect for boosting the cleans for soloing!

Without a doubt, this is the amp I've been searching for!

I knew I made a good choice. Thanks. OFD tomorrow on a brand new one.

I own a 101b and tried the 6L6 20th last week and I was stunned at how great it sounded.

Did you guys go with the Class A option??

I have the class A option on both of mine. It's great for plexi mode and on the green channel. Doesn't really add anything to high gain tones IMO.

Exactly. It's a killer sound with the plexi mode engaged and for clean/light breakup tones on the green channel.

Is that the old/new switch. Maybe mine doesn't have it.
■Color: Black with Salt and Pepper grille cloth
■Power: 100 watts
■Boutique coupling capacitors
■Channel 1: Gain, bass, middle, treble, volume, 3 position pre eq and gain boost
■Channel 2 and channel 3: Gain 2, gain 3, bass, middle, treble, volume 2, volume 3, 3-position pre EQ 2 and 3, vintage modern switch
■Plexi mode with foot-controllable gain boost
■Effects loop return master volume for power-amp
■Effects loop tube buffered (series or parallel) with effects mix control
■Dual assignable presence controls
■Dual assignable Excursion switches for loose, medium and tight feel
■Power tubes: EL34
■Half-power and old/new-style switch (cuts power from 100 to 50 to 25 watts)
■Functions on foot controller: Channel 1, channel 2, channel 3, boost 1, boost 2, effects loop, standby mute

The old/new switch is a different feature... I believe it's a pentode/triode mode switch. The class a/ab mode switch changes the dynamics of the power section. In class A mode, the power tubes are running at a lower efficiency, which results in more sag and compression and also shorter tube life.

Congrats! What you said about the 101B's shortcomings on the Red channel is exactly how I feel. I've said before, if that channel was improved the amp would go from amazing to perfect. It sounds like Reinhold got the 20th right!

And hearing you say that you can get "Black Gives Way to Blue" tones from it makes me want one even more! Sounds like an amazing amplifier! Too bad there wasn't one at Lugo's shootout.

I still think the 101b is an incredible amp. The blue channel on the two is certainly different, but each has its place. Based solely on the blue channel, I'd still take the 20th since the controls are much better to work with IMO, but I really liked that the blue on the 101b was as spongy as it was, where the 20th is a bit more "on top" of the notes (something that's better for most of my applications). As for the red channel, there's very few places where I'd want the 101b instead of the 20th. I always did really liked how the 101b sounded on the Red channel with B2, gain around 1 o'clock, excursion L. However, the 20th has SO MUCH more power to it, and a lot more usable gain where the 101b just got mushy.

The 20th is, for me, hands down the better amp. That said, I could see myself picking up another 101b at some point if I ever had spare cash (ha!). I'm thinking tones like "God Am" for the 101b, and just about everything else for the 20th.

Another thing that really surprised me, speaking of the red channel, is how much gain the 20th actually has! I'd not hesitate one bit to use this amp for the heaviest metal out there! Compared with the Uberschall, the 20th is tighter and more controlled (thanks to the negative feedback loop, I presume), though not quite as raw. Bottom end doesn't lack one bit if you used L excursion!

One more thing I've neglected to mention is leads. They sound un-effing-believable!!! Using my R9 with a Godwood, the guitar practically plays itself! What has me most impressed, though, is the high end; the 20th has simply the creamiest high gain lead tone I've ever heard!

WICKED DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MONDO CONGRATS!!!!!! :rawk:

It really is something else, innit?!?!?!?! I mean, I am still in awe of mine... It's a keeper, period.

So glad you love yours...I totally 100% am in love with mine. It's a non-stop player, I always know when I flick that switch to RUN, I'm in for a good 5 hours before I think of doing anything else.

They are 100% :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :2thumbsup: :inlove:

The 20th XTC will go down as one of those great amps to be mentioned years from now. If the 101 laid the groundwork for the boutique, high gain, channel switching market - the 20th paved the highway. It is on par with a Diezel VH4 as being one of those "must own" amps that are unique in tone, versatility and just plain fuckin sexy enough to bring about years of morning wood. :D
