I don't usually post these threads because most everything I've purchased recently doesn't live up to the hype or clips so it gets flipped. This one's a little different though. I was able to test drive the 50w version locally and that's what made me decide to go ahead and place an order with Ted over at PWE. First off I'd like to say it was one of the best experiences ordering a custom made amp that I've ever had. There was great communication before, during, and after I received the amp. So if anyone's on the fence with one of these, don't give it a second thought.

The tone that's always been in my head is a modded Plexi and the EH3 does it in spades. It's very capable of getting more modern tones also but that's not the way I choose to set it up. I've had the amp for about a month now and wanted to put some hours on it and gig with it before I posted a review.

The EH3 is a 100W, 2.5 channel amp with channels 1 and 2 sharing an EQ and channel 3 having it own. Each channel has is own volume, gain and four position bright switch. The amp is also available as a 50w which is what I demoed but I've always liked the headroom of the 100w so that's what I went for.

Ch1 is the Clean channel. It shares an EQ with Ch2 but has it's own 4 position bright switch and a seperate gain which allows you to dial in a different tone than Ch2. This works great for me because I mostly play LP's so I like to brighten up the clean over the rhythm. The clean is a beautiful sounding Marshall style and sounds great. I can go from sparkling clean and glassy or crank up the gain for that slightly broken up tone. Very cool.

Ch2 is the Crunch channel and I use it probably 95% of the time. This channel is an extension of Ch 1 and has that great modded Plexi thing going on that I really love. Like I said though by adjusting the EQ, which is very active, I can get some great modern tones. And by backing down the gain I can also get some great classic rock tones. One thing I really like is when backing off the gain the tone stays true and doesn't mud up or sound sterile like allot of other high gain amps do. The bottom can be very tight and focused if that's what you like which I do. There's plenty of gain on tap with this channel so it'll do everything up to the brootz. If you need more, it takes pedals like a champ. I particularly like the Cusack Screamer with this amp. It just seems to add more of what's already there and push it to the limit.

Ch3 is the Blow channel. I use this channel mostly for my solo channel. There's gobs of all usable gain here. With the EQ set the same as Ch2, it's voiced slightly more modern and compressed but can easily sound the same as Ch2 if desired with a slight EQ adjustment. Single notes here are very fluid and have great harmonic content.

The back panel has controls for power and standby. Decelerator, which allows you to vary the wattage from 30w to 100w. Presence, Deep, and Feedback which adjust the negative feedback to change the feel of the amp. And last, the speaker jacks and solid state FX loop with send and return levels which can be switched out of the circuit if desired.

It comes with a three button footswitch, one for each channel. Ted says there's a new four button in the works to allow the loop to be switched in and out.

Overall the EH3 in the top 3 amps I've owned and that's comparing it to allot of amps.  And like I said, Ted's service and quality are second to none. ;)

You are right. I listened to plenty of clips of this amp and it has some very convincing crunch tone on channel 2. What is the voicing on channel 3 similar to, as a reference?

Very nice review, Paul, and I'm glad to hear you're digging it. Very cool cosmetics you chose as well!

Just as a follow up, how do you feel about the loop? Have you played with it much to form an opinion on it yet?

Been eyeing one of these. Thanks for the review.

How well do channel 1 and 2 do at sharing an EQ?

I'd also be interesting in hearing about the voicing of channel 3. Is it a further extension of channel 2?

Wow... stellar amp there. That amp is in my top 5 to check out.

Is the gain pretty smooth like an XTC or shiva?

The way I set up ch 3 it's similar to a Friedman BE on the BE channel but has quite a bit more gain available and is a bit more saturated sounding. Like I said, it can go more modern though. Small adjustments on the eq make a big difference.

I've used the loop quite a bit. It's decent but I seemed to have better luck with my Metro loop for what I use it for. Just for the record, it's not a deal breaker.

There's no problem at all sharing the eq on ch1 and ch2 The bright switches on each channel make a huge difference.Yes, ch3 is pretty much an extension of ch2 but with more gain and slightly more compressed.

I don't think the gain is as smooth a Bogner's. It's allot more like Marshall's gain type. The amp itself sounds nothing like a Bogner especially in the mids.

Check out this clip. I think this is a great representation of ch2 and ch3.

Congrats... What cab/speaker set up are you driving this thing through?

Looks epic - and ya, good ol' Canadian boyz here
