For my 20th anniversary my wife bought me a used Mesa Boogie Electra Dyne 1x12 combo. How awesome is that?

I never gave this amp much attention. My wife knew I was looking for a new tube amp and picked the most affordable on the list (several hundred dollars below what I see them going for around the net). Don't worry Steve, still planning on the Cherry Bomb when the new version is ready. I wanted a tube amp to go along with my Kemper setup and this really hits the mark. This amp is a gem in Mesa Boogie's lineup that just did not get the attention it deserved. It sounds very thick and smooth and has a lot of usable gain with tight low end. I am very surprised at how big it sounds for a 1x12. It is loaded with a Mesa Black Shadow speaker. Takes pedals extremely well. This should do nice for those gigs when I want to have a combo blasting behind me. My Kemper rig sounds awesome and now I've got a cool little tube amp to keep it company.

Two questions that maybe you guys can help with:

1. I set it up in my room turned it on and noticed a pretty good hum going on. There was no noise at all at the store when I tried it out. I have a Decimator in the signal path but it doesn't seem to be that kind of noise. Tubes are seated firm and the tone is great. Any recommendations or suggestions?
2. Is there a good way to get cigarette smell out of the amp/tolex? It is a used amp. Do I have to just wait for it to burn out or is there something I can do?

Clips to come!

Dude! You never have to buy anything from me. Happy NAD! Enjoy! Looking forward to the clips...

Great amp..I've played through one before..I think Mesa makes a flavor for everyone in the Mesa vein....

I have the same amp: Electra Dyne 1x12 combo. I absolutely love it! It does everything I need, Nice American Blackface cleans and takes pedals brilliantly - just like my Deluxe Reverb Reissue, Vintage Marshall-esque gain on the Vintage Lo and Hi modes. Put a TS-9 in front of Vintage Hi and you've got some killer fire breathing gain. One of the most overlooked great amps out there. When you say Mesa/Boogie everyone always thinks Rectifier or Mark amps.
Happy NAD!

Nice, those look interesting

As far as the cigarette smell, try rubbing the tolex with a damp cloth (not wet)
A bit of Febreeze maybe? Nothing abrasive though
Let it set in the largest possible room with door open (windows when possible)

Congrats Chad. I've never played one but I've only heard great things. As for the smell, trust me on this. Last year I got a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and geeked out on taking care of it. I researched all kinds of cleaning methods and products and found http://www.detailedimage.com.

Of the many things I bought to clean my car, one was this:

http://www.detailedimage.com/Optimum-OP ... /17-oz-S1/

It's for the car's interior. I used it on my Bogner Uberkab, Mark IV head and Recto cab as well. It will clean the tolex safely leaving it looking NORMAL and not shined up. Plus it has a very mild, pleasant, clean smell to it. This WILL take that smell out of the tolex.

Now you may have some stank coming from the grill too but that stuff will air out eventually. Maybe keep a small open tub of baking powder in the back of the cab for a while to kill the smell. Just don't knock it over.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the heads up Dave! I am going to use some Fabreze on the fabric and look to use this on the tolex. I really appreciate it!

First off..your wife is cool Chad! Played an ED a couple years ago...when I had my single rec, a guy was interested in trading his, but backed out. ED was cool. Warm and smooth is right. I remember though, his hummed like a bitch too. Plus, I have seen guitarists at my work play the Royal Atlantic which had hum as well.

Can you make a short video of the hum and I'll see if mine does the same.

Thanks guys!

When I played it at the store it was perfectly silent. I think it could be the outlet I was using I will play around with it this afternoon.

Dan,

If it keeps up I will record a vid and upload it. I'm not too concerned. The amp sounds awesome!!

Congrats on the 20th anniversary man, that an awesome milestone! Congrats on the amp too, great present. I've wanted to try one for a while. I had the RA100 for a couple years, and really liked that amp.

Congrats!

Some of the best clips I've heard were of this amp with a boost up front. :)

Hey Chad, congrats on the NAD!

I've owned two of these combos, and I really liked them. A little heavy for convenience, but they deliver nice cleans and a great dirt.

Yeah man, it's a heavy beast. I couldn't imagine a 2x12 combo. My friend has a Royal Atlantic 2x12 combo and it weighs 104 lbs.

My Electra Dyne doesn't hum at all, even on Vintage Hi mode with the gain dimed.

Thanks guys! the amp takes pedals so well. I am having a hard time finding any bad tones here.

BTW, I changed outlets and it is as silent as can be.

That's extremely cool buddy! Rip us a cool combo blues jam !!!

I would bet the receptacle you are plugging into is not grounded. Get a cheap tester from Home Depot and plug it in. It's usually an easy fix. Pull the receptacle and attach the green ground wire on the receptacle to the metal junction box and you're done. If you live where metal boxes and armor clad cable is not the code then you'll have plastic junction boxes. In that case, there should be a ground wire in the electrical line that needs to be attached to your receptacle.

What a coincidence. I just got one as well just last week. It is heavy but I wanted something for the smaller gigs that was a littel more robust than my Rivera 30-12. I really like the Mesa ED. Simple to use and goods sounds on both channels. That is all I really need. The FX loop sounded great too. I do not have a hum. It is pretty silent and the reverb is great on it as well. I like it better in the 45 watt mode. I was worried that the clean volume levels would be too loud as compared to the dirty volumes but the gain knob on the back takes care of that. I understand they do not make these anymore. I think the amp is a steal at 1k or below myself. Looking forward to giggin it next month.

Congrats! Ive always been wondering about this amp amp and stiletto
