I can't believe I ever got rid of this amp... because of the parallel loop no less lmfao

2007 VH-4 bought for Spyeman, who is an AWESOME guy, I had already sent me money to someone else for an older VH-4 and was waiting for a refund, and he let me sent him a wimpy $100.00 bucks to hold the head for 10 days... granted I guess this may be normal operating procedure for a lot of people but I thought it was totally awesome of him to do this...

The head was packed to survive a small nuclear blast with these really cool Tetris type looking foam pieces... literally flawless condition except for a mark on the back grille...

I have one small question about the head, the previous VH-4 I had was loaded with Winged =C= 6550's and stock pre-amp tubes... and this one is loaded with JJ/Tesla EL34's and Sovtek preamps tubes and with this one there is a fair amount of "fizz" on the gain channels, now I'll be the first to say that I'm totally anal about my tone, and most people probably wouldn't even call this fizz, probably just "sizzle" or "top end", and I am in no way mentioning this as a bad thing... I wanted to get your guys opinions on if you think it may be the different power tubes, or the different pres, or a combination of both, because I'm going to order some tubes and just wanted to get some suggestions...

Anyway, took a couple pics of the unboxing then a pic with it sitting on top of my Herbert... sadly I won't have two Diezels for very long, but damn if it don't sure look pretty in the meantime, thanks fellas!!!

So another VH4 will be going out your door huh? ;)

Nope, the VH-4 is staying for good... I even have a road/rack case being built as we speak... I never should have let the VH-4 go the first time... I didn't even sell it because I disliked the sound, I sold it because of the switchable loop being parallel, but since I'm moving to a multi-fx unit, and will also have a pedal tray, I'll be able to utilize the series loop and channel inserts... I'm stoked :)

Hey I may have gone back and forth, but at least I stayed in the Diezel family, once I got a taste of Diezel I never strayed!!!

Normally I would be a bit jealous, but I;m looking at the same rig of doom in front of me.
I'm tellin' man, for some tones the Herbert is the most brutal amp on the planet. I could not part with either,
but I will fell your pain if he has to go to make room for the VH4.

CONGRATS DAWG!!!! PIMPIN' AMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP BOTH IF YA CAN

Thanks fellas, I'm jealous you get to keep your rig of doom Mark, but for everything I need to cover for my personal tastes the VH-4 is where it's at for me... I would love nothing more then to keep both, as obviously that's what people who can afford to do end up doing, but it's just not in the cards for me....

People are giving me so much shit about going back and forth... but I have no way of playing these amps without getting them to my home, people act like they've never been torn between two amps and spent quite a bit of time playing both if they were able to, that's all I was doing, I'm just doing it the long/hard way, it took some trail and error, and a decent amount of money shipping the amps, but I definitely feel at home with the VH-4, and should have never left in the first place...

Going to do some tube swapping with the VH-4 tomorrow... Mark did you happen to have any opinion on the tube issues I mentioned in the OP?

If you want to get rid of the high end "fizz" first I would try replacing the preamp tubes with some tung sols, they are not as bright as the stock tubes, then go for the power tubes. If your power tubes still have some life in them go for the pres first. If not go for the power tubes.

I personally like that crisp top end, and when I first got the Einstein I had all tung sol pre tubes, I put in chinese 12ax7Bs, and wow what a difference in the top end. I tried some KT88s (I think they are close to 6550s) and I found that there was no real mid crunch going on. KT77s are kind of in the middle of EL34s, and KT88s.

BTW - Your stack looks sexy

Who cares what people think. It's your dime. when they buy the amp for you and you don't like it, then they can bitch.

I'm running all 7 12AX7 HG Ruby Chinese and SED 6550's biased at 80mA. I don't think the JJ E34L's are causing the problem. They have always been pretty smooth to my ears in
the VH4. I never use Russian preamp tubes.

In order to get some clarity off the mark, I replaced the Chinese preamps in V1 and V2 with TAD 7025S preamps. Those 2 tubes alone were good enough to tighten everything up and de-fizz matters. I have gone the route of all Tung-Sols, and sure enough, it does clean it up and also make it a weeeeeeeeee bit darker. But the key is in V1 and V2 sockets.

Power tubes? I love the 6550's, but I also LOVE the sound of EL34's. I guess this is the beauty of the V, it's workable from a tubes and tone point of view.

I'm not going to give you a hard time about flip-flopping between amps. I too have to go through a number of amps to get the sound that's in my head, and you're right, no store has Diezel, Bogner, Cornford, Fuchs, Dumble, Two Rock, etc all under one roof, so really - getting them and testing them - is my only way. My VH4S is a keeper - I'm just trying to figure one more major 100 watter out to fill in the tonal gaps.

Once again, congrats

Keep both if you can  . I went between the rev blue uber and the twin jet and prefered the rev blue and kept it. There is nothing wrong with flip flopping amps around to find what you like....I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU BROTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry no Bogner. I wonder why ?

No "Two Rock" either... I'm starting to feel better

Seriously, I know there are places in this world where we as gearheads can go and be in nirvana - but I just have to focus on the fact that I'm a guitarist, not a professional touring musician, and much like anything, it can become all consuming. I just love gear because it's endless - all the permutations and combinations...bloody endless. And when work is stressful, family's climbing the walls, stresses of life seemingly ramping up - well, it's easy for me to focus on gear. And surfing.

And midget hookers.

Thanks guys, I've got an awesome mix of Ruby and Tung Sol Preamp tubes in my Herbert right now, gonna swap them out for whats in the VH-4 and see if that makes a difference... I'm A/B'ing the two heads as we speak, and they both have EL34's in them, and granted obviously they aren't the same head, the Herbert definitely doesn't have the fizz going on that the VH-4 does, and I know it's not the amp as I have already owned a VH-4 and there was nothing fizzy about it... off to do some tube swapping... and Ventura, I wasn't singling you out about giving me shit, in fact I wasn't even referring to you, I was referring to the people that I'm sure have read this thread but haven't posted yet... but felt the need to post in some of my spam threads :)

Cheers fellas!!!!

i bought both my Diezel heads from Ken @ UltraSound. That place is wicked. Like u died & went to amp heaven.

All good man, don't jump!!!

And on a more serious note.... WOWWW!!!

Got a mix of Ruby and Penta 12AX7's in the VH-4 and.... "Oh hai VH-4, there you are!!!!" fucking amazing... also I through a Mesa 12ax7 in v7 of the VH-4 and it didn't like that one bit lmao... seriously crackling and all kinds of crazy shit... although the tube could be bad I suppose... it's brand new but been in my gear bag for awhile and probably got knocked around...

That's it, I'm done, pre-amp tube order is being placed, and the Herbert is going on the block... if anyone is interested shoot me a PM, I probably won't get around to posting the FS thread 'till Monday or so... cheers guys!!!

I think Kit just wanted to make sure it was not you. You're one of the more insightful and Über honest guys around about your tone and
what you have tried. I don't really understand why anyone should care about someone's trying out of different amps, but a lot of guys today own
20 amps and call the guy with 21 a whore.
