Need a little bit more from my pickup. Using Suhr-Aldrich

Hey guys, I've got the Suhr-Aldrich pickup in my Peavy EVH guitar and running it through the Herbert, but I feel there is not quite enough sting or bite. For example, when I do a pinch harmonic it's there, but i have to work for it. There's no real sustain, the attack is good the distortion is good, but not quite enough. So my question is, has anyone compared the Suhr-Aldrich pickup to the Painkiller or the nailbomb? I'm looking for a little bit more out of my pickup, but without a lot of extra distortion.

Thanks!

I do not really know is pinch harmonics a good reference point as that problem might be somewhere completely else if your PHs are not screaming through. Even with clean sounds or without amp the pinches should be clearly audible. Have you tried adjusting the pickup height also? Too high or too low settings can change the tone a lot.

Unfortunately I have no experience on the Suhr-Aldrich pickups, but BKPs surely are wonderful pickups. Which is the best option for your liking is almost impossible to answer as the search for the tone is very personal and subjective. What guitar (woods, tuning, etc.) and what kind of sound you are after would be a good starting point. Personally I have tried Nailbombs (alnico and ceramic), Miracle Man and Painkiller and all those are gone since. Currently I have 8-string Black Dogs (basswood Ibanez RG) and 6-string Rebel Yells (in two mahogany LPs tuned to drop C). Im also planning to install a 7-string BKP set, but have not yet decided which set to for this time - So far Rebel Yells are my favourite, but also they do not work in all situations/tones.

Thanks for the response i.ak! I'll try raising them tonight, but from everything I've read, I'm thinking the BKP Aftermath.

Adrian, I have a spare nailbomb if you'd like to try it out. I've also got a painkiller set in my Les Paul Custom.

I just went from a set of Aldrichs (that were rewound to a lower output so not the best comparison) to a set of Rebel Yells. The difference is night and day to me. The RY's are more open, more top end, more dynamics and more umph. Just more of everything, and the EQ in my Einstein works a lot better now. I also replaced the Aldrich bridge with a DSH+ (before I switched to the Rebel Yells) which I liked better but IMO the BKPs are still a far superior pick up. Nailbomb or Painkillers would be good start, but I REALLY like the Rebels.

im running an Aldrich in my LPC...sounds killer...but now im interested alot more in the Rebel Yells.... Damn you Tripstan!!!

Any medium output BKP should do the trick, which one, really depends on you.

Sorry but why did you change the Wolfgang pickups? These pickups are amazing!!!

Hey Bato, I kind felt like the wolfgang didn't have quite enough drive, umph or sting..... Whatever you want to call it. EVH always claimed he liked the head to do the work and use less over-driven pickups, which I tend to agree with, but I still want a little more.

Pauly I promise you will love them. They are totally worth it.

Now I'm debating on getting another set for my backup guitar or trying another kind.
