What would be the better purchase here -

a NEW Renegade head with a NEW Tourmaster 212 Cabinet for $1498

OR

a USED Tourmaster 4100 head with a NEW Tourmaster 212 cabinet for $1450 ?

I don't play out really anymore - just a "living room rocker". I like the ability to have 4 different channels on the TM, but with the Main 2 of the Renegade its like having 3 channels really.

I go from clean to bluesy crunch to 80's/90's metal.

I had a used Tourmaster combo for a day, but returned it because the reverb didn't work. I liked it for the very brief time I had it - but obviously a day isn't long enough to discover any problem areas really.
I have no experience with the Renegade.

Other Egnater experience was a Rebel head a couple years ago and a Tweaker 40 combo that I currently have.

Need to make my mind up in the next day or two and would like some feedback from you all out there!

Thanks in advance.

Just curious, why not a used Renegade and TM cab for under a grand?? GC has several of each.

Otherwise my choice would be the new Renegade and TM cab. The Tourmaster seems to have "issues" that have been well documented on here.

Good luck.

I've had a Renegade 212 combo for 3 years now, and I love it. I also have to second the above question.

Arguably, there is a different tone between an open backed combo and a closed cab. But between price and size, a smaller (if you went with a combo) cheaper unit might be a more practical route. If you went with a combo, you could even go with a 112, although they aren't much smaller than the 212. Saving the $$ allows you to replace the tubes right away too. Not a bad idea regardless of what amp you get.

I have to say that I like the idea of the Tourmaster, but I never bonded with it when I kicked the tires in the store. Previously stated problems aside, it seems like too much under the hood for me. My Renegade pushes the limits, but still maintains a plug-and-play vibe that I'm not sure I would have with the Tourmaster. Also, the appearance kind of reminds me of the Family Truckster on the original Vacation movie. (sorry Bruce...)

I'm sure the TM is a great sounding amp. But the above are all reasons why I would recommend the Renegade. And unless money and size are no issue for you, I'd recommend looking at something smaller and cheaper/used too.

(fwiw: I love the sound of the head and 212 cab. But they are MUCH larger than my 212 combo, and that is a factor for me.)

Good luck.

Money and size are NOT an issue.

Like the looks of a "stack", not combos...but a great deal on a combo could sway me.

Want to stay away from used if I can, just thought the used TM head might've been a good deal.

Also looking at some Mesa's and Hughes/Kettners. Definitely want to get something I can buy local - no ordering online, etc.

I like the head/cab thing too. You want local and new, so again my vote goes Renegade head and TM212 cab.

+1 on going with the Renegade head/cab. Great amp for the styles you're going for. Having the head version allows you to go with different cabs (1x12,2x12,4x12) and is easier to lug around than a combo. The TM 2x12 is a great sounding cab with the CL80's and can do most of the styles you're going for. For the 80's metal, you might want a cab with Celestion G65's. I have a Mesa vertical 2x12 with a V30 & G65 that make ch2 kick some serious a**.

I'd go with 'made in America'.
Of course I'm just an old jingo..

Thanks for the advice guys! Looks like the Renegade would've been the best choice, but I jumped ship from Egnater to Boogie & ended up getting a new Mark V head and a Rectifier 212 cabinet.

I was able to easily get "my sounds" with the Mark V. It seems like a superb amp.

I would hope so at the price they're going for

Yeah - it wasn't an inexpensive purchase, especially considering I also got a Sky Blue Ernie Ball Petrucci guitar at the same time!

But my Mother's passing last week has made me realize we need to live it up while we can!

The Tourmaster sounds good, when it works, but it's been a buggy product at least. Maybe the new ones are dubugged. I'd advise to stay away from the used ones, because of these problems and potential warranty issues. I haven't read much about problems with Renegades and they sound good. I think I'd go with a used Renegade, because I'm cheap and don't like to pay anything close to retail.
