Need some advise. Possibly some exercises.

Normally I’m good at fast alternate picking and downstroke picking for example Master of puppets. But then at times now and then I have som tension in my right forearm which limits me in both down and alternate picking.

I have a job which at times requires very psychical work. And I think that is the problem. And I think maybe some exercises can help to relief the tension.

Do you have any idea? Or advice? It’s frustrating.

Plumbers and mechanics who use a lot of grip strength with pliers / vice grips etc can definitely run into this. Also lifting and carrying even moderately heavy things throughout the day with continuous flexion of forearm can fatigue and tighten things up. Heating pad on low, increase temp and circulation, then very slow, gradual flexibility / stretching of those forearm muscles. Plant your hand palm down, fingers outstretched on a table and slowly move forward to stretch the inside / palm side flexors. May be complete snake oil, but I really like Tiger Balm Neck and Shoulder Relief. It’s light and absorbs / dries quickly. (Not Original which is super thick and greasy) I F’n hate getting old.

Yes! Good ideas! I’m actually a authorized plumber here in Denmark. I both do desk work and in the field. And it’s when I use my finger strength a lot the forearms tighten up :)

stretch out good before you play, dont play with so much grip pressure and take aleve. im a bowler and use many of the same muscles in my hand and wrist doing that as playing, every so often ill get tendonitis so bad i cant pick up a ball or a pick and just have to stop for a while.

I'm a robotics mechanic and am using grip strength constantly, so I run into this alot.

When you practice/woodshed, concentrate on being as loose and relaxed as possible, and listen to your body if it hurts.

Most of the action of fast picking is in your wrist. Don't over tighten your pick grip and don't tense up your forearm. Use heat and massage for fatigue.

I`m a long time fighter with tension in my arm and shoulder coming from excessive playing. It is important to warm up before playing with some light stretching and arm movement etc as well as cool down after playing, again with some light stretching. Warmth is good to, like taking a bath here and there to relax the whole apparatus (at least in my case it helps).
Another thing that helps is building up muscles in your arm. This as well relaxes everything as the muscle goes through a regeneration phase after weight training and releases the tension.
Of course, all this things have to be done, when there`s no pain or soreness in your hand and arm but when everything feels healthy! Otherwise the problems will only increase.

Depends on what muscles your using at work to a degree. If your using a lot of bicep this can cause tightness in your shoulders and forearm. If your not overusing your forearms it may be a good idea to hit them. Also remember you have a top and bottom forearm and more often that not the bottom (palm side) side gets used much more than the top. Stretching and resistance exercises should help to balance them out.

I tried this and it really helped. I had pain in my hand and forearm. It's not immediate, but after a few days I started feeling relief.

Tried a heating pad and some equivalent to tiger balsam last night. Some stretching as well. Definitely made a difference! Gonna keep on stretching! Thanks!

I use my fingers a lot to carry heavy things and when using pliers. It’s on the upper side of the foreamp there’s tension.
