Hi guys,

I got my VH4 this past week and I'm having an issue with the clean channels (1 & 2).

There's a sort of high frequency distortion that's happening when I strum a chord - it fades and crackles out over about 2 seconds or so. I called Uwe Salwender right after I got the amp and he sent me out new preamp 1 through 3 tubes. I installed those today and it made no difference, it's still doing it.

Has anyone else had something similar happen with their VH4's cleans? It sounds really unnatural, almost like a low-fi digital distortion.

I'm playing an Ernie Ball Petrucci 6 string into it - nothing else plugged in as far as effects etc and it's doing this. Also tried with our other guitarists' Ibanez and Strat and it happens with those too so I'm pretty sure it's not the guitar.

I'm gonna try to record it tonight and post clips so you can hear what I'm talking about.

Thanks!
Ryan

Here's the clips:

It's not quite as apparent here as it is sitting there live in front of the speakers and it's worse on Ch 2. Just strumming random chords trying to get it to happen. That sorta fading crackle as the chords decay is what I'm talking about. The Mesa I had before this definitely didn't do this sort of thing on its clean and semi-clean channels, so I'm assuming there's a problem somewhere.

Uwe's sending me a whole new set of preamp tubes... will advise after I get those!

Peter - do you have any idea on this? Uwe sent me a whole new set of preamp tubes and it didn't fix it. I really don't want to have to ship the amp back unless I absolutely have to, is there anything else I can try?

I tried to send you two emails but they just bounce back to me - is something wrong with your guys' mail server?

Thanks!
Ryan

Hey Ryan,
didn´t get Your email, sorry.

The server should work again on Monday evening.
Please try it again.

Peter,

I'm still not able to get email through to you... bounces back undeliverable every time.

Do you have any other ideas for me before I send this back to Uwe to look at?

Ryan

I use a Rocktron Intellifex LTD with Send 2 and the parallel loop. Work great for me.

i've noticed that some effects can cause a light distortion in channel 1, depending on the loops that are used (thats why i asked). don't know why though...

The only reason I can imagine for that is when the effect's output is set to high.

i dont use any effects whatsoever - just straight into the amp .
the noise is always there .

Hey Ryan,

I know this appearance on the VH4 and on other amps.
If You are not in tune You will hear the crackling much louder.

The VH4 has a very sensitive preamp gain structure. If You cannot
live with that, we have to mod the amp. But first try to stay exactly in tune
or swap V1 into a 12AX7WB Sovtek. This will decrease the crackling.
