Need to cool my EG5.....

I am using less and less gain. Even for the heaviest tones I try to go with as little gain as possible for a bigger sound and better dynamics. My EG5 sounds way too gainy. I always use the SL2 becaus iit sounds thicker and fuller. My EG5 just sounds too compressed and distorted in comparison. The SL2 can be used for any music because channel 2 has mucho gain.

Any thoughts on taming the EG5? Right now I have the JJECC803s and ECC83s and the amp is WAY too gainy.

I have some EH and Tung Sol 12AX7s I could try. I want it a touch more mellow and not so over the top.

Thanks guys! But, was the Mod 50 or the EG5 designed to wok only with 12AX7s optimally? It came with Sovtek tubes. Maybe I'll throw the Sovteks back in.

I think the ECC803s in the V1 slots adds some beef and fattness. I have the ECC83s in V2.
I was thinking of trying my Tung Sol 12AX7 or EH in V2. However, I also have a Mullard 12AT7 sitting in my parts drawer. I guess that is basically an ECC81. I was told to try an ECC803 and ECC81 combo in my Fender modulae so maybe I could use the Mullard in that scenario or try it in my EG5.

12AX7 - ECC83, 7025, ECC803, E83CC, 6681
12AT7 - ECC81, 6201, 6679

Honestly I don't have any modular stuff yet. I ordered my M4 in Feb. Looks like Sept'ish. Hope I'll have the scratch lol. After the general announcement on the delay I dumped all of my cash on a GCPro, cables, a line 6 filter pro, and I'm buying a Godin Flat 5 x tomorrow.

As for your tube question, I wouldn't think you'd have an issue. I messed with a dual rec pre a few weeks ago swapping a 12at7 and sovtek 12ax7lps in v1. I like the sovtek a bunch. It's pretty nuts how different a 12ax7 can be from one manufacturer to the next. The at7 sounded worse than the stock EH12ax7 in v1 to me. It's simply a matter of taste though. Mix em up and see what you like. I would imagine the guys over at the Egg Layer load em with sovteks stock for a reason.

On a totally separate but funny note, I played a gretsch 6120 thru a randall plexi over the weekend and chatted with the store owner about my M4 on order. He flipped his freakin lid when I told him the deal I'm getting on it. He thought I was bullshitting. I told him this after he gave me a quote on a loaded RM4 ($2k!). Good thing I did my research and got my order in early!

2k for a loaded RM4 is a bit pricey, should be around 1400-1500 hundred, so whoever quoted you 2 grand, well thats a rip.

Sovteks have a good reliability from what I understand, though sonically they are not my fav tube. call up doug or someone at a reliable tube store and tell em what you are wanting to do, I am sure they will at least give you some good ideas on what to try tube wise with less gain.

I sent my MHG back to EGGIE with EH 12AX7s for the EG5 upgrade and it came back with Sovteks. Maybe for a reason? Then tried JJs and I remember hearing my buddy play through it and loved it so I may give it some more time....but I hear weird noises.

With the EG5 I was hoinh it would be a better MHG or better modern high gain tone, which I really do no use that often to be honest. I may look to trade up for another MHG or an EG3/4. Mayb Jeff can tweak this one to be cooler and not o over the top or maybe so 80s. I wouldn't even use this much gain for thrash!

I have a Mullard 12AT7 I may try in V1 and I have a Tung Sol and EH 12AX7 I could try in V2. The Mullard should make it about 40% less gain. I'll see how it goes. I wish Egnater made a modern high gain module that cut like a Marshall. Maybe that is just the nature of the typical modern high gain tone, less cut so I should have kept the MHG or went with the EG3/4.

Hopefully I can find a way to tweak this one.

Where do you have your gain and treble set? On channel A, with the gain at 10 oclock and the treble on 9 oclock it should not be overly bright or compressed. I find that with my semi-hot Suhr humbucks, 10 oclock for gain on the EG5 is the sweet spot. On the brink of getting compressed, but still very gainy and punchy. Im using EH preamp tubes.

Right now with the Sovs I have gain at noon and treble at 10:00. I'll try your setting. I also have the prescence at 9:00.

I am going to try some EHs and TSs again.
