Needing some Les Paul neck pickup advice

Right now I've got a Burstbucker in the neck of my Les Paul. For my needs, it's too dark and too hot. I'm looking for something to replace it that's much lower output and quite a bit brighter. Basically, I want to use it for low gain chording and soloing. Not looking to pile the gain on for metal or anything like that. It has to sound good though!
I'd prefer to not spend over $80, and used is an option.

Any advice is much appreciated!

WCR Darkburst....I'd replace the bridge too.....you won't believe the difference...seriously.

2 words .... Lindy Fralin ... just replaced both of mine ... check out their web-site ... http://www.fralinpickups.com .... I put an 8K at the neck and a 9K at the saddle ... it really made a difference in my Paul ... with my XTC 101B ... really warm

Haha, well I just looked at how much money I have and since I won't be buying pickups any time soon if I want to eat, I played around with the Burstbucker. After lowering it away from the strings, I found it to be much better than it was before. While I'd still like to try something new, I'm content for a while.

I dunno man. For around $45 bucks used, a Duncan 59 in the neck is HARD TO BEAT for me.

That's my go-to neck pickup. I love that thing. Nice and bright and crisp, but still fat.

The SD Jazz is my go to "passive" neck HB.

But in all honesty, the EMG 81/85 is a tough combo to beat in a Les Paul, they belong together.

Call me weird, call me simple, call me blinded with fanboyism, but I love my LP's and LPC's as they come... I just can't bring myself to modify them from their original state.

You're simply blinded by your weird fanboyism!!

Depending on which pups they came with they can sound good. But there is so much more out there that you really should take your least favorite sounding LP and try a swap with some better pups.

I've got 4 other guitars totally re-dialed with new electronics and sweet gizmo's... They all sound stellar and I've tweaked each one to be a player for me. Anytime...ANYTIME I pick up one of my 3 Lesters, they're just perfect as they are, end of story. So it's not like I haven't thought about it - I'm always changing and tweaking guitars and amps, but my Lesters stay as they are...that is of course, until I come across one that doesn't sound right to my ears.

Peace,
Fanboy V.

You'd have to spend a bit more than 80 bucks, but if you do, check out the Sheptone PAF style pickups, particularly the AB or BK Sig sets; amazing tone.

Agreed......

To TS,
You dont need to install a new pup and destroy the look of your les paul, just lower the pickup height.
