well, I decided I liked everything I heard about the ecstasy so I went ahead and ordered a new one. Got an UNBELIEVABLE price on it. Should be here tomorrow but won't be able to hear it until the weekend,no cab  what to expect?

Congrats

What to expect?

One of the best gain tones you've ever heard, but that nobody will hear when you play live, thus setting the table for a long love/hate relationship that will inevitably end in a bitter divorce

;)

really? Well, luckily it came from a store with a 30 day return policy should I not like it

Oh you will like it, that's the thing
You just might have problems cutting in a band situation
Then comes the dilemma

But if it works for you live, then it could be your dream amp

That's the point when it comes to XTC. In SOME bands it is very hard to cut thru. The famous "blanket effect" killed many people's good attitude to that great amp.

That was my problem, but I managed to fix it modding the amp. Basically two small mods solve the whole problem. I digged deeper into the circuit though, but other mods were "to taste" :)

Regards, Andy :).

Run the B/M/T controls at 2 to 3 o'clock and use V30s and you will have all the cut you need. Remember the tone controls have audio taper instead of linear pots.

Actually Treble and Bass tapers are audio, Middle and Presences are linear. That is why it's hard to balance highs and mids, because till 1-2 o' clock Treble seems hardly to be effective.

The point is also that Presence tapers in XTC are 25K, what makes them less effective too. In JMP Presence was 5K. I changed mine to 10K, which improved response.

Also depends on the music played and band structure. In my band, with second guitar and playing classic rock tones, even V30's weren't a remedy.

Regards, Andy :)

set neck has a bunch of good easy mods to make it cut more. I think if I had to pick just one, it would be the C40- remove one cap and your done.

Andy - your Bogner posts are the best! I just got a 20th A XTC. Really like it.
