I recently got the Einstein - took pics today. I love it of course. If I didn't already own a Herbert, this would certainly be my favorite amp. I'm just not sure if it is different enough from my Herbert to justify keeping. The clean seems to be better to me, but I don't really care much about cleans. Mode 3 on channel 1 with a BB preamp boost is awesome. Channel 2 seems more like channel 2 of the Herbert to me. I need to spend more time comparing it with the Herbert. I may trade up for a VH4 instead.

Here is a pic with that other one in there too. ;)

Nice...

I like ch2 on mine also, it's very compressed and sustains for days. Definite liquid lead thing going on there. Haven't quite figured out how to dial in a strat though. Do you play any single coils? I do have a hard time getting a slight strat crunch, the Einsteins's kinda brittle in that range. Then again, I've never heard a high gain strat sound so good! I'm interested in your comparison to the Herbert - I've also been wondering if a Herbert or VH4 is in my future.

I'm not really into single coils. I'm a dual humbucker kind of guy. I've only played the Einstein with my PRS custom 22 with Dragon II pick-ups. I have a PRS Standard 22 with EMG 81/85 that I will try with it tonight.

For what I like to play, I'm thinking the Herbert is a much better choice. It is tighter and meaner. I do like the cleans and mid-gain tones out of the Einstein a lot though. The Herbert can get me close enough for what I want though. I will say the lead tones with a little reverb/delay are incredible. I have to see if I can get my Herbert to replicate that.

The Herbert is my all time favorite amp so it is a tough act to follow when comparing amps (even another Diezel). I need more time with the Einstein though I may try some 6l6s in it.

Try it with 2 6L6 and 2 EL34s.
I just got an Elmwood Modena 90 and a 5150 III to compare. All nice amps....but my Einstein is not going anywhere.

That Modena M90 is at the top of my gas list along with the M60. I was torn between the Einstein and the Modena - I decided to buy the Einstein to try first since I love Diezel amps.

What do you think about the Elmwood? What amp is it similar to? Can it do both mid gain/metal tones well? How would you compare it to the 5150 III and the Einstein? I had the 5150 III but sold it. I liked it a lot but I got it at the same time as the ENGL SE and I preferred the ENGL a lot more. I'll likely buy another someday when the used prices drop.

You got gain on Ch2 on 3 o'clock???

That's where it was when I took put it up for the picture. I actually run it at between 11 and 1.

I personally think 3 o'clock is where the amp takes off tone wise.

I'm selling the Einstein. It's just not different enough from the Herbert for the tones I like to warrant having both. I may try a VH4 after this sells. It's listed in the Classifieds Forums.

That's so not rock'n roll to have protective pads between amp heads

That's nice, where can I get some? What should they be made of?

I really want to try those Elmwoods too, can't find a dealer who has them yet.

VH4 & Deliverance will be next to buy for me I guess - although upcoming new Diezel amps can change this. Any idea what the price tag will be on the new bass amp? I was going to get an Ampeg SVT Classic & now I'm holding on to see what the Diezel is going to be like.

It's a hard foam exercise mat - kind of like what you see under weight benches at the gym. I got it at Target and cut it up.

So you think the Herbert can do most of the Einstein sounds? I want Herby someday, but I've only played an Einstein and it was a fantastic amp. I've got myself thinking I want 'em both hehe, but if the Herby could come close to covering the Einstein I'd prolly just save up for the one. Nice amps btw!

I've been a Les Paul guy forever, however, since purchasing the Einstein, I mainly use my Strat now believe it or not! Channel 1 Mode 2 with the gain at 3 o'clock is the most incredible sounding tone with a Fender I've ever heard. It get's that Timmons, SRV, Eric Johnson etc. etc. tone depending on your guitars volume. Channel 2 gain set at Noon with the Strat is just..........well it's just amazing! ;)

My strat doesn't sound brittle at all with the Diezel. Of course I'm using the SCN pickups which may make some difference also. The main bonus to this is that my back isn't killing me after a five hour night three nights a week playing Gibsons!

Thanks to Diezel my physical health has actually improved also! Unfortunately, my chiropractor is probably not going to be too happy! :D

peace,

They are not the same, but they are in the same ballpark. If I only had the Einstein, I'd be extremely happy. After the Herbert it's probably my next favorite amp of all time. The Herbert can get me close to what I like best about the Einstein. The Herbert definately does more of the metal tones that I like. So I decided to sell the Einstein so I could try other things. I may try a VH4 next. I have'nt fully decided on what to do.

New to the fourm. Looks great.

I have a ENGL Powerball and my buddy has a DIEZEL Herbert. I was thinking of getting a ENGL SE but have not played/heard one other than soundclips. mhenson42 I see you have a Herbert and a ENGL SE. Can you give me a comparison of the two. Which has better cleans, gain, etc.

Any recommendations is appreciated.

Hi Habuman- welcome aboard!

When comparing the 2 amps, it really comes down to personal preference. They both do every tone you can think of. The Herbert is my all-time favorite amp. The SE is a close second. I think the Herbert does better on the clean and mid-gain tones. I like the SE a little bit better when it comes to the brutally heavy tones. The SE is tighter than the Herbert as well.

I owned a powerball once. I didn't really like it at all. I thought it sounded overly processed and almost solid-state and I wasn't a fan of the mid-gain tones. I actually preferred the fireball more. The SE is much thicker and warmer and does the mid-gain/clean tones well. You can't go wrong with either amp. If you like the ENGL voicing, you would be extremely pleased with the SE.

Nbarts, please do not post anymore!
I am obsessed by your Edwards les Paul. The black hardware, the beauty......
