New amp needed - not Diezel :-(

Hi,

Probably not the sort of question you'd expect on a Diezel forum... However, I am about to move into temporary and small accommodation in the next 3-4 weeks due to work and I will have to leave my Einstein behind. Where I'm going to be staying is small and has neighbors, but I still need to keep playing/practicing as much as I can during the evenings.

All I plan to do is take one guitar, but I need you guys to advise me on a portable small watt combo amp for practice under these circumstances. My budget is open, but size and portability is key.

The one good thing is the work I'll be doing will pay for my planned Schmidt, when I get back :D

The new Engl Gigmaster

Hey I didn't even know about these!

Also, thanks for suggesting the Vox.

I need to get my butt in gear as I need to sort an amp out quickly and get acking!

I would use the volume on my head with a 2x12 cab or bogner cube before I ever gave it up. No place is too small with a volume knob.

Yeah I get what you are saying, but this place is like a one bed place with a ting kitchen diner. So small and portable is what I need.

The best:

Small ENGL amp, to me my ENGL Powerball was the closest sounding amp to my Herbert that I have played so far. Not real close by any means, but super tight and a "clear" high gain type tone is trademark for both companies.

Maybe a small clean amp - like a Laney VC15 - and buy a load of awesome distortion pedals, like the OKKO Dominator. Bedroom Mesa Boogie right there.

I used to have the OKKO Dominator and sold it when I went with Diezel... some irony there. Thanks for the suggestion, but I all I want is a small low powered amp that I can stick in a corner, plug in and get away with playing at low volumes without upsetting those around me.

I play a lot after work in a small camp room, much less privacy then you are speaking of.
I use a vox ac15 with a set of bose headphones. When i need more then the amps models will give me I use a stompbox or two. When I get home and turn it up it's weird because it almost sounds better through the bose

the bogner alchemist sounds pretty good even at whisper volumes
bought a mint one for a friend for $550
that thing has plenty of gain without getting fizzy
and you can run it at 20w without sounding thin and squishy like most EL84 powered amps

Dude, just try a 1X12 with the amp. Dont waste youre cash on a new amp.

Even if you would by another amp youll have to use some volume.

When this still is no option, go digital

Hmmm... I see your logic about getting a 1x12, may be this option sounding more attractive. I could also keep the 1x12 and use late nights at home. AND use it with my Schmidt, when I get it ;)

I have a Engl 2X12 and an Engl 1X12. At home the 1X12 is amazing, i use this with the Herbert. At low volume the sound is so much fuller, you just need less to get there. Keep in mind that you will have to adjust the eq.

I just got your reply as I was looking online at the ENGL1x12 cab! I think this is the way to go.

Mate, I'm afraid that you'll have serious problem getting used to the sound, articulation, sensitivity of a new amp compered to Einy, unless you're willing to send some money. I am getting tons of pleasure playing Einy at extremely low levels, but if you do not have space :aww: ...

If you re gonna move for a sort period then maybe you should try a software application(there is always room for a laptop) and keep your money for a new guiatr :D

If you 're gonna move for longer period, then take Einstein with you, and then find a girlfriend to sleep at her place

I'll be away for 6 - 8 months and space is an issue, but i should be okay with a 1x12 cab - hell if I'm that tight for space I'll put the bed against the wall and sleep in a sleeping bag

Just out of interest, what sort software apps are you thinking about?
