New amp search. I think new 1959 Marshall is in the running.

About 5 minutes in he starts going from stock Plexi to adding additional gain. When he hit the last (most gain) switch, I thought that was excellent low-volume Marshall tone.
This might be near the top of the heap, Chow Mein Trannys and all.

yeah I think that was the best clips I’ve heard, they both sounded awesome, but I was leaning toward the 1959 as a preference

I think the 800 is the better one if you wanna get your grind on but Dave Friedman mentioned on the latest tonetalk that the way they did the mod is sloppy and may cause issues down the line like potential blocking distortion and noise. Take it for what it is worth obviously BUT as simple as the gain mods are, they sound very good in this circuit and that's what I think Marshall did right. Friedman takes a Marshall and makes it sound like a Friedman. Marshall just gave you more of what was already there without losing that Marshall character. too expensive for what it is though. Tracii Guns hit it on the head when he said just give me a Marshall and a MIJ black label SD-1 and I'm good to go.

Again, might be the best sounding Marshall I heard in a long time (the 1959, I'm less convinced by the 800). I thought it sounded great in the other Steve Smith official demo video as well. "Yadda yadda they only added a switch and a cap for $1K" etc. Still it sounds better than all the other super expensive and/or complicated boutique things IMHO.

I agree.. I had said similar on a Marshall post and they said the same thing. They wanted subtle changes "less is more" ( but more $$ lol) without changing what makes the 1959 and 800 great. Whatever mods I do or try, I always want the stock circuit there on a switch or knob if i want that sound. You can get a Friedman close but it just doesn't do "that" thing. His Randall designed Brahma preamp for Lynch and the RM100 does do it though so he has it in him but his other offerings don't do it that easily. I'd love Marshall themselves to do a Synergy Plexi with these mods. Now we are talking. Do it Chaina! Do it!

His Plex definitely does that “thing”. Dave can give you that if you want it. His current BE’s aren’t for me either but I would have absolute faith in him to make a Marshall do what “I” want, with any mods etc.
His NAMM Jose sounds incredible.
I really want to dig these amps but I just can’t escape the simple fact that a $50-80 pedal will give this to you on the stock circuit.

True, his recent plex and Jose can do this. The BE and HBE's etc.. are missing it. Still sound good, but may not be what you have or want in your ear.
