Hey guys,

I'm a bit tight on budget and I was thinking of getting a 2x12 empty cab and throw 2 K100s in there to try out with my Herbert. What do you think?

I think of tone as a product of three major components in your signal chain (pickups-amp-speakers). To me that makes up 90% of your tone, everything else (guitar wood, speaker cab construction, etc.) contributes, but not nearly as much as the first three. YMMV

So this begs the question(s):
- what types of tone are you chasing?
- what pups are you using?

Personally, I use PAF style pups into my Herbert and out of a Mills 212 with V30's. Is great for classic grind to metal. If I was shooting for drop C-D then I would use my active pups into a 212 with K100's.

Again, YMMV

Hi thanks for your input. I rarely go below D# and I use 6 string and I play metal. Currently using emg's and v30s. I am happy with this setup when I try with my other amp which is an Engl. And with Herbert its fine too actually, but only when I'm right in front of the speakers and 6 feet away it sounds pretty harsh and dispersed. So I was thinking of getting another cab for Herbert to tame the harshness/highs. On another note, I'm also thinking of getting bareknuckle pickups but perhaps in the future after sorting out the cabinets.

That raises the question whether the guitar sounds harsh with the Engl, too. I recommend checking that first!
If yes, I'd try a different guitar/pickup/ cab.
If not, I'd try to change something about the Herbert.
Changing things at random, makes the store happy, but seldom gets you anywhere.

What do you really want to do?
Get rid of the harshness?
Change PUs?
Change the cab?

Get rid of the V30's! harsh as all hell, and a nasty mid spike to boot. Try out some Tone Tubby 40/40 Ceramics or the Celestion K100's, both of which sound incredible with my Herbie

Hey guys, I got a new cab and installed 2 K100s in there. It definitely sounds much much better with the Herbert and much smoother. Havent got the opportunity to crank the volumes yet but I have a feeling it will kick *ss. I also briefly tried running two amps at the same time to see how it sounds but I realised I lose a lot of low end :(

How are you running stereo? Sounds like your amps are "out of phase".

You may want to try 6L6s to smooth out the sound.

I thought the Herbert was a bit sharp/harsh when playing leads.
I use the Herbert with Mesa 212 and Mesa 412 cabs loaded (Vintage 30s).
I'm using Seymour Blackouts and EMG 81s.
So I tried 6L6s and 6L6s/EL34s in an attempt to smooth out the sharp pick attack.

6L6s had the best cleans, but the riffs aren't as punchy and crushing.
EL34s had the most intense and crushing riff sound, but the leads were hard on the ears (at band volumes) and the cleans were dull.
I decided to go with a mix of EL34s and 6L6s. The cleans sound pretty good, the riffs are intense, and the leads aren't sharp in my ear.

V30's will sound a lot better when they are broken in, how new are the ones in your cab?

I have a Carvin Legacy cab with V30's and I was thinking about an X pattern with a pair of K100. But are the K100's everyone has mention made by Celestion or Jensen?

Hey Metal6string: K100s are Celestions but they are 8 ohm speakers, so you should check whether your v30s are 8 or 16 to avoid problems.

Snowdog: I have the v30 cab for 3.5 months now but never really played at loud volumes so maybe you might be right about the breaking in.

sdhnc123: I use 6 KT77s currently which I swapped from EL34s and they are really great but I liked EL34s too.

Laura: My setup when I try 2 amps simultaneously is guitar into a pod hd500 then pod left out into Herbert fxloop return, pod right out into Engl fxloop return, herbert fxloop send into left pod fxloop return, engl fxloop send into right pod fxloop return, pod fxloop send (is a stereo out) stereo Y cable split into 2 mono goin into Herbert and Engl inputs. It sounds fine this way but with less bass.

I use the Lehle Little Dual and there is no loss of bass. There is if I use a y splitter though. There are cheaper pedals but that Little Dual is the shiznit!

Yeah I was checking out the celestion web site last night and all K100's are 8 ohm but I have 16 ohm V30's and I rewired the cabinet, so it would have a left and right totaling 8 ohms per side.

Do K100's come stock in a cab?

The Diezel 412 Front loaded ones have a custom option to have G12 K100s.

Ok, well I guess I'll need to look around, maybe I can find one with k100's. Thanks for all the info
