Hello Egnater board,
I have lurked here in the past while searching for a new amp, but didn't want to post till I actually made the purchase.
I have been playing about 30 years and have been through a lot of amps from Marshalls, to Mesa Boogies, to Hughs & Kettners, a brief stint with a Bogner Shiva, Ampeg, and Diezel Herbert.
One of the problems I always found was that 100 watt head were just too much. I could see the usefullness if I was playing an arena without running through the PA. However, most of my playing is in the home, jamming with other musicians, local bar and club gigs. For that reason I have fallen in love with 50 watt heads over the years. I just could never find the one that provided the versatility I desired. There is just a better fell and soul in 50 heads to my hands and ears. I know technically the db difference is small, but the feel and sound are a big difference to me.
It was funny, because having the Mod 50 with a Bassman, SL and SL2 at a recent practice really got the attention of everyone in the room. Even the owner of the rehearsal hall was floored. This is seriously the best amp I have owned in 30 years and I would consider it my dream amp. I play everything from blues, to funk to classic rock and hard rock. I am not a metal guy however. The SL2 is so much better than the Marshall JCM 800s I have owned in the past.
A great thing about the Mod 50 is how great it sounds at all volumes, from a whisper to stage. I was one to get caught up in having a 100 watt head, more guts, power but it got old fast. The Mod 50 has more than enough guts for any venue and I doubt I would ever play out with a 100 watt head again. This thing is just so smoother and silky in tone. I am sure with the right modules it will get down right nasty.
I just love the option of having the ability to change your tone from day to day and week to week. I hear guys complaining of balls, but I am not sure I get that. Hey, to each his own! I just haven't found an issue with this amp yet to be honest. The heaviest we go these days is maybe Alice in Chains, etc. Maybe you guys are playing Slayer? Ha
Anyway, it is nice to be here.
