What do you think? I kind of like the color. It's matte and not gloss. Maybe a black single coil?

Mattes are for wiping your feet off before entering the house. It looks like an ugly cobbled together hunk of shit to me and the relic'ing work is pretty half assed looking too but as long as it plays and sounds amazing that's really all that matters. Buy what you like.

I would like it more as a non reliced, non Frankiefied guitar. Clean body mount nickel cover hum and lipstick neck SC, no pick guard. Make the finish gloss and hardware shiny. It would have a cool hot rod, Chevy blue kind of vibe.

I feel like EVH misses the mark on these.

To me, the look of the Franky body only works in the context that it's Franky, stripes and all. The design of the body is a reflection of Ed's entire process leading him to that point, the reason it's so cool is because it embodies the DIY ethos of making something that doesn't work for you into something that does.

Trying to distance the Franky from Ed and make it into a regular non-signature production guitar makes as much sense as using a Sex Pistols song in a commercial for scented body wash.

IMO, EVH would be better off making non-striped finishes of their regular Striped models. Despite basically being the iconic form of a classic Charvel (a single pickup Strat with a non-recessed Floyd Rose), Charvel themselves make no guitars in this style outside of their Custom Shop. EVH releasing the Striped models with standard finishes would not only make more sense, it would fill a niche that Charvel doesn't do anymore.

JEL Ultimate Sin era cool the way you described it. Agree that the franken front pickup and selector switch detracts from how nice the color is.

I’ve grabbed maybe a half dozen EVH guitars off of a music store rack over the years. I must admit, I do think they are good quality for a mass produced guitar at that price point.

If they are selling they are selling - but I can’t help thinking that EVH is over-saturating this market. What was once extremely rare and cool is now commonplace.

Rather than spinning off every conceivable finish - along with resurrecting the Kramer Pacer body shape and headstock - I would have preferred they keep the models more limited, use real Alder rather than (b)Asswod for the majority of the line and spring for legit northern ash for the production B/W ‘Eruption’ style Frank and relic’ed Red/White Franky.

The Floyd with the shorter length saddles?
I'm guessing it would be similar to what Charvel uses on the San Dimas models, the Korean 1000 floyd.

1000 Series (Original-style)

The 1000 Series Original is the Korean-made version of the Original Tremolo, made to the same specifications and materials, but is available only to guitar manufacturers and can not be purchased aftermarket except for the Burnt Chrome finish 6-string and the 7-string version.

THIS!

The Charvel San Dimas MIM I had with an Alder body sounded and felt superior to the Basswood RWB EVH I had for a short time after getting it in a trade.

I agree with you 100 Percent . My Evh Frankie is one of my best playing and best sounding guitars and I completely hate basswood . The other thing is ---Buy these used like I do . The resale is terrible !!! I do wish they had alder bodies though.
