So it's been a while since I've posted here hope everyone is well.

I've been set for the last few years with all my amps and AxeFXII never really have had gas for any amp in about 6 years until now.

With all these new small mini heads coming out and some of them sounding as great as they do I'm jonesin for a small head 1x12 cab set up for my house.

I've eyeing the ENGL Iron Ball and Mesa Mark V 25.
Was able to play the Mesa and needless to say was blown away.
The Engl I have not had a chance to play in person but listening this thing on youtube side by side to the video of the Mesa I'm really stuck. Anyone have any input on the ENGL? At Home Studio and Gig wise?

Thanks

Peace

I knew immediately when I saw this thread title that it would be the Ironball vs. one of the Mesa mini models, and I knew immediately what my answer would be. I have played them all and here's the way I'd break it down:

Overall tone - Ironball wins
Versatility - Mark V25 wins
If you want the Mesa Rectifier sound at manageable volumes - obviously...
If you want the rectifier sound with reverb - obvious.

The Mark V25 vs. the Mini Rect or Rectoverb isn't a matter of which one sounds better. Both of them sound just as good. It really depends on what you're going after. The rectifiers have a unique sound, and the Mark V has the Mark IIC+ and IV circuits. All of the rest of the gadgetry of the Mark V 25, like the 5-band EQ, is icing on the cake.

The Ironball is just a really, really great sounding amp. For an EL34 amp, it has a decent low end punch and it's not ice-picky as the Mesa stuff can be. Oh yeah, the icepick and all of the common Mesa Boogie qualities are in the mini versions (although I've never really been bothered by the so-called ice-pick, but it can sound spiky if you let it get away from you). Overall, I think the Ironball just sounds fuller and has more articulation in high gain. I also like the Ironballs clean channel more than the Mesa Boogies even though the Mesa stuff gets a little janglier and, I suppose, more in the Fender ballpark.

They all have great FX loops, but the Mesas may have a slight edge in FX loops as they do just as well with digital or analog effets. The Ironball seems to sound better with analog effects. Keep in mind that my only tests were with my analog pedal board and a Line6 M9. In clean or pushed clean of the Mesas, where you want to hit it with an overdrive or boost, it develops this compression that subdues the sound of the low EAD strings and is more pronounced in neck position. I think the front-end of the Ironball is a bit more pedal friendly.

The Ironball cuts through a mix probably the best because of the typical Engl low midrange, etc... The Mark V cuts through better than the Rects. Overall, the Mesas are a bit louder I think, but the Ironball isn't slacking with 20 watts. They're all gig-worthy for us mortals who probably only play smaller venues.

Ironically, as far as speakers are concerned, my Mesa Black Shadow speaker sounded better with the Ironball than the Mesas. I particularly liked how the Mesas sounded with my Mesa 1x12 loaded with an Eminence Man'o'War (I have 3 Mesa cabs).

When it comes down to it, there's not obvious choice. Mesa Boogie has been outstanding in the way of providing us with a fantastic variety, and Engl has put out the ultimate low-powered Engl that compromises on nothing. Personally, I prefer a bit simpler amp with less fuss, so the Ironball is my personal choice.

I hope this helps your decision man.

Have had both, Ironball by a mile. Just sounded better/bigger, and more bad ass, more clean headroom. It doesnt just sound great for a small amp it sounds great compared to any amp.

Love my Ironball. I have anInvader 2 also and this amp is go to for smaller gigs and practice. Sounds better than most full sized heads. It's much more full sounding than my friends 6505+ That we compared it against.

I just got a mini rectoverb 25 and my evh 50 sounds better at low volumes or any volume.

It's the way you are dialing it in or the speaker you are using. I had an EVH 50w head and couldn't get it to sound great without enough volume to wake the family up. No problem like that with the Mesa Boogies. There are certain combinations of settings and power levels, and Mesa Boogie are known for needing attention to settings. I'll go as far as to even say, after having the two side by side, that the 100w 5150III sounds better at lower volumes than the 50w.

I've been really happy with my Mini Rec through a 1x12 Thiele. I can practice/gig with it, and thrown on a 4x12 it sounds huge.

Just heard a Friedman Pink Taco in person! DAMMIT!!! That thing sounds killer!

Seems everyone is telling you to purchase what they purchased. Some even suggest different amps than the two you asked about.

I have no experience with the Engl but I own the Mesa Mark V:25. I really like it because I can run the cab clone out to some studio monitors late at night for very low volume playing.

No problem. If you have any questions about the Mark V:25 just ask.

I have played the Iron Ball and heard many good clips of the MkV 25. Based on my limited experience I would take the Mesa all day. I am an Engl fan but I am also a big fan of "value for dollar" and the Mk has it in spades. So many good tones in that unit.

How much for the mesa. Played an ironball at GC, and wasn't too impressed. For $1199 I wouldn't buy it.

$1249 I think. That's why I say Mesa all the way.

There's nothing like the feeling of having this logo staring back at you.

Bump for more opinions.
Already have an Ironball -which is awesome- and an EVH 5150III 50W -which I now gig with, instead of my Invader or Sig:X-, but owned a Mark IV for 2 months. Loved the cleans, didn't care for R2, liked the lead channel.

Would the Mark V:25 give me something I don't have, or is my GAS more fueled by the cuteness factor?
