I just recently replaced V2, had an Ei in V2 that went microphonic after about 2 months with one of the new Mullards and was surprised to find it's a nice tube. They're fairly expensive compared to some of the other new production 12AX7's so I was wary try one. But so far so good.

Though it's kind of weird to see Made in Russia stamped on the side.

I've been tempted to buy some of those but they're very pricey. Maybe I could grab one or two. What positions do you have them in your Einstein?

I use my Mullards in V-1 and V-2.
This is where the tone changes will be most affected.
I have also changed so that I am using Mullard 12 AU7's to get less distortion.
The Einstein has so much distortion on tap and I never need all there is, that I can get more tone from less powerful tubes and control the distortion amount better.
My next step will be power scaling, as I want the ability to get power tube distortion, which I feel gives me more of the tone I want. Too much pre-amp tube distortion, to me, leaves not as much clarity in the overall tone of the amp for my personal usage at lower volumes, where I want the amp to sound more cranked, but still clearer sounding at lower volumes.

In other words, I want the tone and feel of a fully cranked amp, but I do not want the volume. However, to get the power tubes to distort, means cranking up the master volumes, which makes the amp so much louder then I can use, so I cannot achieve my desired tones with the feel from the amp that I want.

Right now, I am using a Xotic BB which is o.k., but it does not achieve for me, the desired tones yet. It only comes a bit closer.

I ran Mullards in V1/V2 of my old 50 watt Einstein then tried a NOS Tesla 12ax7 in V1 on advice from some tube guru's and the amp went from great to amazing. It gave the amp a smooth/chewy flavor to the sound and the distortion was a bit more focused. The NOS Tesla's run about $50 each but they're worth the money.

I use an older GT Mullard in V2 and it's definitely a great tube for that spot. Might end up putting a real Mullard 12AT7 in there at some point to lower gain though. It's been on my list of things to try for a long time.

Still haven't found what works great in the V1 and V3 slots though. Currently I've got stock Ruby tubes in them, a bit earlier had a Svetlana/SED 12AX7 in V1.
