Settled in with some decent bourbon the other night….started prowling the interwebs and found a slime green Evh 5150 series, used of course at GC. Couldn’t resist!

Anyway showed today. Needs some setting up badly but…this joint is me concerned (see photo). I’ve got an early model 5150 in rocket red and I swear the joint is not there.

So is it a bad factory joint? Anyone else have one of these by chance with a similar joint? It’s visible obviously but you can feel it also.

At the end of the day I can return it…just curious.

Thanks fellas!

Joint?

The grain is continuous on both sides of that line. Based on the picture, I would assume that it's a masking line from where the finish from the headstock ends. Is the neck unfinished?

That's what I was going to say, looks like a masking line to me. Can you feel any kind of ridge there? Nice quarter sawn neck too!!

I'm with the previous two posters^. Looks like the back of the headstock has a clear finish and the back of the neck is unfinished because the grain of the wood is continuous.

Yep you guys are right that’s exactly what it is. The masking line from the clearcoat didn’t even phase me. Yesterday was a tough day at work. Should’ve waited to look at it.

Either way cool Guitar. needs a set up badly. Neck is incredible looking and feels really good. Frets are in great shape. The switch has been broken off so now it’s a jagged ass steel nub. Meh.

The same…but different.

Question: There should be a small amount of adjustment in the pups. (In the green fiddle), one of the screws seems stripped…I think these mount direct to wood. How best to get the screw to bite? I’ve done the toothpick trick before..this a TINY hole though. Lol

Don't know the toothpick trick.
Not an expert either.
Can you put a dab of superglue on the end of a 'disposable' screwdriver.
Is there not a routed out cavity behind there?

If a toothpick is too large whittle it down with a sharp little knife and jam it in there with some wood glue. If it's still too big mix some wood dust with some titebond or similar and work it into the hole then let it dry and you should be aight. If that doesn't work sell the guitar to a TGP yo-yo, preferably one of the mods, they deserve messed up instruments.

Pulled the pup to take a look…How bout this big ass chunk of foam under the bridge pup…that’ll pull that small screw out for sure.

All set.

This thing was a hot mess when it arrived. Claw slammed to the top of route, DTuna wouldn’t even engage, action was stoopid high, micro-tuners must’ve never been adjusted as they were still caked with burrs, strings were resting on the bridge pickup, 3-way switch was snapped off at toggle…lol.

News strings, and setup, new switch. Micros glide….pup adjusted. Sweet.

Not for everyone, but cool good playing guitars!

Hey ladies and gents
I’m not a tech by any stretch..so a little out of my league here. Anyway to make this guitar feel/play a little more slinky, or loose (for lack of a better term at this moment).

It plays a little tight…especially the trem. Not sure what gauge was on it when I got it. I put 9’s. Went to two springs (which are pretty standard, not heavy duty) Standard tuning. Just a little stiff feeling as is . Almost like playing 10’s, or heavier. Action is pretty low, no buzzing

Just looking for some wisdom.

Thanks

I am sure that an actual tech can give some better advice than this but, in my experience some guitars are just more slinky than others. From a strat / super strat perspective, I have had a few identical models that were just tighter than others no matter what tweaks were made to them. Either by me or a well known tech. Same goes for LP's in my experience but I have noticed it more with the strat / tele longer scale lengths.

Picked up a Charvel SoCal hardtail a few months ago and it is slinkier than my LP's with the same string gauge. IDK.

I'm not a tech either but I always stretch my new strings before final wind up (tuning) and I always put some graphite powder (like from a hobby store) in the nut. You can always try a different string brand too. I know neither of those are technically the problem, but it is worth a shot. I'm actually looking for a guitar that has "tighter" strings if that makes sense. I play .11s tho
