NGD - It's a Gibson

2024 Gibson SG Standard '61 - Classic White (15% off at MF)

My first real guitar was a new '78 Gibson Les Paul Custom (black and gold) when I was a kid around 13 or 14. since then I've been very disappointed with Gibsons I tried, and stopped even considering a Gibson. The new '63 SG Custom got my attention, so did the price, so I looked at both Gibson and Epiphone SG, and decided to try this one.

I am not disappointed; in fact I'm very pleasantly surprised though my expectations weren't very high.

new in factory sealed box. nice even color on the rosewood fretboard, medium dark, no pronounced streaks - which I like.

Almost great; setup and intonation out of the box - great; fit and finish, almost perfect, a very small bit of black paint on top of the headstock, easy to miss, no issues around the nut, nut is cut fine; fret ends, binding on neck and fretboard all good, no visible tool marks, cracks or kludges; no finish blemishes so far, the sun is rising so I will look closer in the direct sunlight; all the knobs turn smooth and work, pickups sound great,... all in all very well done Gibson.

I'll play and inspect it more today and decide if it stays or gets returned - so far it's a keeper, nothing discovered that requires a return.

Thanks!

They also have a nice silver mist finish on these '61 Standards, was very tempting, but I like white on some models like the SG. Really don't like the common cherry stain.

The 15% off was nice too!

Yep the silvermist and white are my jam too.

I love the old USA supreme blue and green too.

The standard cherry finish on sgs bores me to tears - I'm stoked you got a pretty one!

Your white SG is so classy. I also have pretty much dismissed Gibson for years due to QC. Glad you got a good one!
same here regarding the QC; the 15% off, and MF return policy made it worth taking a chance. My expectations for the QC were low; happy to be proven wrong this time.

I have only owned one SG and it was a faded something or other. Sounded great, felt odd strapped on my shoulder because I was so used to LP's, and it had a horrible case of neck dive. Would buy another if I found a better balanced example.

no noticeable neck dive; I use a simple 2" black leather strap with rawhide on the underside, holds it in place just fine. Feels very light, but I have no way to weigh it, can't be more than 6 lbs, feels much less.

Thanks!

That's the one I have. I got them down to $1699, new in box, plus I had $150 in rewards cash. I thought it was a steal. Of course I put a Tonepros bridge on it, locking tailpiece studs, and Kluson Revolution locking tuners on it. Stays in tune for days, sounds killer and covers lot of ground. Through my Engl, it's mean and aggressive sounding. The stock pickups are great. No desire to change them.

Congrats rsm. White is one of the sweetest axe colors. I'd def be warning my fedex/UPS driver of serious consequences the next time he replaces my gold hardware with chrome like that. Let him know you won't stand for that trick twice. He could've asked first.

I'm not a fan of hard goldware either. AMS has a nice exclusive dark cherry, (Angus Young flavor), but the gold doesn't do it for me.

I am a huge fan of gold hardware. I even had the dentist put some gold hardware in my mouth recently when I needed a crown. All my guitars get converted and I like to tell people it makes the tone better, lol.

Same.

Now I'd like the gold on the 1963 SG Custom with the large vibrola and three gold covered humbucker pickups. If you're gonna use gold hardware, it has to be Elvis Presley levels of excessive gold IMO.

You're gonna need a custom for that; at 2.5X the price

A few hundred bucks and my white '61 SG would be covered in beautiful gold hardware and when people asked my name I'd tell them "You can call me Boss". The look of real worn gold hardware is even more awesome. The look of a worn gold Gibson pickup cover filled with tiny dings from my finger pick is even cooler yet.

Nice!! I almost got an SG recently but im still feeding my Les Paul fetish...

My 2019 Standard is perfect. I was so close to abandoning Gibson once and for all about a year prior to getting that guitar. I decided to give them one more chance when they did the restructure and was blown away. I just got one of the new Studios and is a great guitar as well. Im glad they started putting more effort into the QC process because I love Gibson guitars.
