hey all

Im using a Randall rt250 with the M4 and find the higher gain mods to be really noisy ie: SL2 and Erect. I mean Abnormally noisy for a hi gain. Any suggestions?

Thanks Drew

Maybe tubes. I've owned a couple Randall hi gain mods and they were noisier than any of the Eggie stuff.

get ya a good set of the old Ei tubes like george lynch used in his friedamn video

I own an EG5 and it's pretty quiet. I can't imagine SL2 being any louder.

Yeah, maybe a tube problem. Does the Ground Lift do anything?

Do you have flourescent lights? What settings? Etc.
Maybe it's something unrelated to the rig?

Is there a fader on a light ANYWHERE in the house?

Are you standing near the amp (pickups to close to a power transformer?)

etc.

I don't have any noise problems with my SL2.

Another tip besides the obvious, Tubes, proximity and dimmers or sliders in your home is.........where in the m4 are the higher gain modules? They should be in slot 2 and 4. Thus making them furthest from the input! Gain and input make for possibly more perceived noise.

very interesting indeed. well my EG34X needs to move to slot 2 from slot 3. :)

DLX - Slot 1
EG34X - Slot 2
VX - Slot 3
EG5 - Slot 4

Thanks Jeff :)

What kind of noise?? Hiss? Buzz? Squeal?

my erect is noisy... turn the gain down lol.. its not as bad as a real recto thats for sure!

hey. Thanks for all the tips. I am using a Monster power 2500 to condition the power. so it shouldnt be a power problem.

I dont know I cant figure it out. Maybe tubes. Could it have anything to do with rack position. I have the conditioner on top then the Randall then the m4?

I dont know? Its a loud hiss even when I use a noise gate in the pod xt that I use to change mods via midi its still there!

does it get quieter as you turn the gain on the module down?

yes it does dramatically but for hi gain it still super noisy and for a noise supressor not doesn't kill it?

Have you tried taking the Pod out of the equation???

my guess is the noise is coming from there what effects are used .any gain ,dist ,chorus ..

Run the M4 .direct to the power amp see what happens.

+1. Obviously high-gain preamps will always amplify existing noise more than lower-gain, but I don't find the M4 mods to be noisier than other high-gain preamps/amps - if anything, I find them quieter on average. I *DID* find that the M4 was susceptible to ground loops (as is any amp/preamp) and the effect is more evident with high-gain modules, but that was easily fixed by floating the audio ground between the M4 and my Switchblade 8B (NOT by lifting the AC ground . . . ).

Hey Jasco,

Could you elaborate on what you mean by floating the ground - technically how this is achieved (or point me in the direction of good reading...)?

thanks for any info!

Ya I would also like to know what you mean by floating the ground?

Thankyou!

Drew have you tried taking the Line6 away and just running straight?

Does that improve the noise
