Noisy Module?

Has anyone else had any issues with a module being noisier than others?

I'm running an M4 with a T/V, ERECT, and EG5 (labeled "X") into a TC Electronics G-System then a Mesa 2:100. The G-System is/was particularly noisy until I added a Hum Eliminator...however, the "X" module is still pretty noisy even with no input. The other modules are quieter than the fan noise so I can't complain there.

I could try changing tubes in the module but I'm a bit more worried that the module is buggy because it was one of the first EG5 modded MHG's. Anyone have any insight to this?

I have an early EG5 myself and had the same problem. The preamp tubes were bad. Try changing them out. Its very possible you have preamp tubes from the same batch.

That's good to hear, I'll swap the tubes and keep my fingers crossed.

For what its worth I also think I get better tone out of the EH tubes I replaced the Sovteks with.

Replaced the tubes and no, the hissing on this module hasn't gone away.

So this has just changed in the level of hiss? Is it gain hiss or white noise? If you changed out tubes and it did not lessen it, I need to know if either the gain knob or the master knob for the module makes it change. Meaning is your gain floored? Or is your master floored? If there seems to be no relation to the pre amp knobs. You might have an issue with the module. As always send it to us we will test it and determine if it is in need of repair or replacement at no charge.

I have the G-system, and its super quite, no noise here. If you are getting noise, chances are you have grounding issues.

I use the G and it's pretty quiet....

The G-System isn't making noise but you will find that the G-System has creates ground issues when using the 6 cable method. I've eliminated those issues with the hum eliminator, which I see is clearly stated in my original post. Regardless, all of my modules are quiet except for the EG-5 or I wouldn't have specified that it's a noisy module.

Jeff, it appears to be a gain hiss but more than I would expect. I keep the gain around 1 o-clock and the master at noon - the hiss is loud enough that it's difficult to speak over with my power amp at a respectable volume.
